It worked. Spain got two free throws and the ball. It was ridiculous.

Glad Fernandez is playing in Europe. I hate flopping (even if the Warriors benefit from a call). Hate it in soccer and hate it in bball. The women flop so much less. It's pathetic to watch some of the men doing it.

Well, it WAS a foul.

It was a flop (sure seems like quite a bit of exaggeration), but that sure as heck looks like a foul to me.

Agree it was a foul but it's the reaction like he's been shot that annoys me.

yes, it was a foul... but fernandez reacted like he had been shot in the head

he wasn't being pulled on very hard at all, particularly given it was something of a loose ball scenario

...That's not a flop. He was trying to turn one way and got pulled at the back of the leg the other direction causing his body to change directions radically unexpectedly. His head seems to rotate excessively...RIGHT as his foot is pulled out from under him causing his whole body to rotate in the same direction his head did. The contact was 100% illegal and I'm glad he got 2 free throws and possession...that was a blatant foul.

I *HATE* flopping...but seriously...lets have someone film you getting pulled down unexpectedly at the back of your leg and see what it looks like in slow motion. There are enough example of REAL flopping that this one shouldn't have to be included...

oh please - watch it again several times; yes, iguadola is pulling on his leg, but he doesn't appear to have much leverage; his hand is on his leg tugging for a bit which slows/stops fernandez (so, agree, it's a foul); but then, once it's clear rudy can't get to the ball, he goes into his ridiculously exaggerated falling/screaming motion

A first flop should result in an automatic 10-game suspension.
A second flop = season-long suspension.
3 flops = lifetime ban.

I hate flops.

so many players flop in the nba, including american players.

what's such a big deal about that particular flop?

Look at his plant foot. He's shifting weight to it and it gets pulled sideways out from under him causing him to fall over. At least from this image, I can't make out his facial expression one way or another to know if he's exaggerating his facial expressions...but his body is contorting to being pulled on.

Further...have you ever had someone pull on the back of your knee forcing it to bend? There are tendons there that are somewhat sensitive/uncomfortable to have yanked on.

Again...I believe there is flopping in basketball and think its terrible...but this is a poor example of a flop.

yes - there's plenty of flopping in the NBA

this one, likely given the setting (gold medal game) and the fact that there were so many good angles on it - it captured a lot of attention

plus the complete discrepancy between the pulling on the leg and the reaction as if he'd been shot was more over the top than most; I found the gif hilarious

iguadola had his hand on the back of his hamstring for a while and pulling on it; however, fernandez only reacts severely (and look at the facial expression - it is one associated with extreme pain - like he was being shot) once he sees he won't get the loose ball; then he immediately throws his hands up looking for the foul (which is strange given the severe pain you were just in)

I don't get the anger about this particular flop. I hate flops when it's not a foul. I don't get too worked up when there is a foul and a player exaggerates it to ensure the it is called to the referee's attention. A foul is a foul, and the guy fouled him.

I disagree...he goes into the extreme reaction once the foot is pulled onto his toe causing him to flip around, which also coincides with the player sliding their hand closer to the knee, which happens to be the place where it would be easiest to cause the guy to completely lose his balance and fall in an ackward direction.

I still don't get how you can make out his facial expresion as anything extreme. In the ESPN article you linked he just has his mouth open like he's yelling. I don't see anything over the top. If I'm going one way and someone pulls my leg out from under me while I try to go the other way I'm going to be yelling too.

Bottom line...flagrant foul was the correct call. When I think of "flop" I think of a non call/questionable call being exaggerated...like when someone jumps backwards and falls down 2 seconds after contact. That isn't what happened here...

The dude was screaming out in pain. Then immediately throws his hands up for a call. Collins and the other announcers spotted it for the flop it was.

It doesn't make me angry. I saw the gif (which clearly mocks the flop) and cracked up because as I watched the game yesterday it was such an obvious acting job.

haha - exactly

the only reason I posted so many times in this thread is that as ridiculous as the over-acting was, those who said he wasn't flopping is even more ridiculous

again - his reaction is one of someone being shot - likely both in the head and the hamstring at the same time; he gesticulates and flails wildly as he goes to the floor; but, the injury vanishes immediately and is able to throw his hands up looking for the call the moment he hits the floor

This is a euro style flop. Watch some Euroleague and you will see a lot of these theatrics. They are more dramatic over there.
