Last time I watched this movie I found myself goggling the EXACT same thing.

I seem to remember the conclusion was that it was a reference to the C on a Chicago Bears cap

EDIT: or maybe the cubs. Anybody knows?

It's definitely the Block C cap from Cal Baseball.

The Cubs' logo is a red and white "C," rounded on the edges. It has been that way for as long as I can remember, at least 35 years. The kid's cap seems to have a gold C, blocked off on the edges.

The color on the video is off, but it looks red to me. I was thinking it reminded me of the Cleveland Indians hat from the time, but it doesn't appear to be an exact match.




Some internet sleuthing has me convinced it was made for the movie.



That looks pretty clearly like a piece of felt glued/stitched onto a plain blue hat.
