How do you arrive in Berkeley for game days?

It can be such a challenge sometimes. I usually park at McArthur BART Station, take the BART to Berkeley, walk through the grove and make my way up to the Sproul steps, meet friends at the fountain to catch the pre-game concert, and then the march up with the band to Maxwell Field.

What are you tried and true methods? Only 8 more days.

Just budget a few thou to the Bear-friendly ESP plan (per seat, per year) and not only your game ticket but parking also will be totally free.

But WAIT, there's more: the cost of the plan is guaranteed fixed. Inflation? Nope, fuhgettaboutit!

PS: car park tailgating and restrooms not included.

I'm confused as to what you would prefer -- it seems like either you'd like for everything to be free, or for the Athletic Department to magically create more space around the stadium for tailgating.

Please advise.

Coming up from Fremont is used to be either 1) BART from Fremont, 2) drive 880 to 980/24 exit at MLK, go up Adeline and park at Ashby BART, take BART 3) Park on MLK near downtown (no longer available), 3) Go up Hearst and find parking on Northside (actually pretty easy).

Now I live in Berkeley and I'll walk

My life coach says I have to increase my carbon footprint so I drive. From south bay 680 to 580/in on telegraph or parallel street/park in RSF (better for get away), walk up the hill and back.

Coming from Fremont, sometimes I'll BART. If I'm coming up with a bunch of people, we'll pile into the SUV and I'll drive up 680->580->13 if we're coming early enough for Piedmont/Gayley to still be open. Otherwise, 880->University->Hearst-as-soon-as-University-starts-backing-up, and park somewhere on north side (usually ending up around Euclid and Virginia)

I dump the Prius into the ocean, where it belongs, I get into our huge Navigator, take it to the Boalt Hall parking lot, run over a few kids who are too busy on game boy to notice the car coming, swear in Latin at my fellow lawyers from the opponents school, have my wife push me up the stairs (not is wheel chair, just lazy), stop to oogle some coeds and get slugged by the wife, watch the team come in from the bus, shout your the man of something '80s at Keenen Allen, who will role his eyes, enter the stadium shouting "you know it," etc., take the elevator to the University Club, fart in the new Chancellor's face, call Mayor Bates a commie, eat the buffet like Blutto, and then go to my seat, and join the little old ladies in dirty chants.

I just love game day.

Pre-renovation: I'd drive to my parking spot (usually at RSF). Sometimes I would take in the pre-game concert at Sproul and then either march up with the band or head over to the Faculty Club for some refreshments...then up to the stadium in time to see the band.

Post-renovation: Driving to my parking spot in the Dwinelle lot. For the first few games other than the 9/8 game, I'll probably high-tail it up to the stadium right away, just so I have enough time to take it all in, including the brand spanking new Field Club. For the 9/8 game, I'll be bringing my daughter, and I always do the band concert/march up when she's with me.

Whatever you do, don't plan on taking the Dumbarton Bridge to get to the Nevada game! It will be closed all weekend.

Basketball on weekdays UGH, but sat*rdays are not too bad.. especially early.

Please don't tell anyone else, but imo the best approach from the south is 880 onto 580, then off on MLK, continue past the popular Adeline right, and past bart, then follow the bus (there's ALWAYS a bus) till Haste, finally Bear right up the hill at will.

[late add: there's alotta construction in the first mile or so via MLK, but it moves pretty good.]

Or not.

For football, I take the Ashby exit off I-80. Take Ashby east a couple of miles. Just after crossing College Ave., find street parking in the residential neighborhood southeast of the Ashby/College intersection. No parking permit required on Saturday, so you can park all day for free. From there, it's a nice 15-20 min walk to the stadium on flat terrain. You avoid all the congestion near campus on game days, and it's a pretty easy getaway after the game if you need to head out right away.

Other than that,

Drive to West Pittsburgh BART by way of the California Delta Highway (both charming)
BART to downtown Berkeley
then up the hill.

I seem to forget how to get home on a occasional basis, though.

Donate enough (barely) to get comped a football parking pass. (Basketball -- different story). Drive across 237 from the South Bay, up the Nasty Nimitz, cut over to 980/24 and hop off at MLK. (Hey, is that the Cupertino Bearmobile up ahead?). Up Adeline to Shattuck, then up the hill to parking. Not much for tailgating, although maybe have a sandwich/beer in the car for when we pull into the lot.

Home, in reverse order. Mood depends on how the score turns out.

...I have been doing this for years and if you all spread it around you are toast. I come from Sacto, get off at Albany and head up Marin to the roundabout, swing down on Los Angeles into North Berkeley and park. Same way out, even when heading to SF or something...takes about 5-8 minutes from the time I am in my car until I am on Highway 80. Last time I took University it took me an hour.

Plus, let's say the game is at 12:30 for grins. I leave sac between 8-8:30 and arrive around 9:30-10:00 so no problem getting a good spot and no, I will never disclose my secret spots. I then walk over to Saul's have breakfast and get some cookies for the game. Then at 11:00 or so I am in Sproul for the pre-game stuff, walk up the hill and get to Memorial an hour early to watch the warmups and get settled. been doing that one for years.

A late game, maybe lunch at Saul's or even Bistro Liason, or just a Top Dog on Hearst.

Works for me!

BearsWiin lives in mansion overlooking the Pac Ocean, then on gamedays jets thru the south bay northbound. Three times (that i know of) me and Wiins' travelling parties have crossed paths by crazy random happenstance:

1) An hour after Bears lost in SanDiego wha wha what, he walks right by, forlorn after his car died; not a good day for Wiins.

2) Walking / driving down Bancroft post-game one or more finger salutes were exchanged, and enraged shouts of "stop stalking me!" rang out.

3) Yet 'nother time go figure at least an hour after a game, we zipped by each other both racing southbound on Nimitz near Oakland Col. His personalized plates are very easy to spot, featuring the rare "ii" pair.

So who's to say OldenBear, how many times our ships have crossed paths, an hour after a game too? Esp given neither of us know the other's wheels choice. Mine is a GOLDEN '99 Odyssey, frequently swerves for no apparent reason, tmi secret agency encrypted here:
http://bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=841928604#post841928604

PS: Basketball? First evening the carpool lane on 237 and/or up Nimitz requires THREE persons (as it surely will someday), maan, we're gonna have to find a 3rd basketball Bear, or start selling off weekday portions of our men and women's season tickets.

#Crazy Random Happenstance R US.

Best post of the thread.

OC Bears (judging from the Cal hats and shirts on the flights) take SW out of John Wayne to Oaktown or Jet Blue out of Long Beach and rent a car or take Bart and then taxi. I sometimes take Bart from the airport to Rockridge and eat at Zachary's before the game (but one must eat responsibly before drinking) then, it's the 51 bus or taxi to fraternity row. Thank God for Cal fraternities:

From Alameda. Drive to Fruitvale BART. Get out West entrance. Usually walk, but will take shuttle due to hamstring pull. See you there!!!

We get on the train at Davis and get drunk responsibly as we head towards Richmond Station, Bloody Marys in hand. Hop on the Bart to Downtown Berkeley Station where adrenaline fights the buzz as we walk up the hill, but then loses completely as we reach the Faculty Club for further adult beverages served by Marco at the Faculty Club Bar. And then there's a game in there somewhere . . .

Perfect for me.24 west to Fish Ranch Rd.Up the hill down Claremont 'till just before the hotel's back parking lot.Park her facing uphill for a fast getaway.
We use to walk in through the School for the Deaf-now Clark Kerr, then up Prospect to the south end zone. Now still the same but walk down to Sproul,Telly, etc and the walk up with the band.
