Conversion rate was atrocious but I missed most of the game.

you basically throw in the towel on coverting to a first down and accept punting from inside the 10. That means Nevada is extremely likely to get the ball in Cal territory. All they have to do is pick up 10-20 yards to set up the game winning field goal. Based on the way, Nevada had moved the ball all game, they'll obviously pick that up. And they did that, and more even though we got a nice bounce on the punt to push them back further. Didn't matter.

So yes, that playcall basically guaranteed defeat.

Yup Tedford basically said he was scared by running Sofele on that third and long in our own territory. Game was over when we gave that up. D tried stop them but Nevada converted 2 or 3 critical 3rd downs. Every third down they went down the middle. Do we not have a play down the middle, esp. on 3rd down?

This was one of those frustrating plays that is backed by years of data. We conceded our chance to win the game on 3rd down by runnning that play. Nevada really only needed about 30 yards of field to get the game winning FG. They were chewing us up all day too so I don't know why we thought we would stop them and that the odds were better by punting.

On top of that, Nevada throws a pass on 3rd down to go for a TD instead of relying on a FG kicker to win the game for them. Their post game quotes talk about confidence and trust in those situations. I notice the only time we do something like that is out of desperation and necessity.
