I don't know if I understand all the facts, but not playing your starting quarterback punishes the whole team, coaches, and the fans. Missing a summer tutoring appointment doesn't seem to justify that. Couldn't Tedford hade done something that's more directed at just Maynard? Something like make him have to do some extra conditioning, community service, extra tutoring, something more focused on him. Bridgeford starting when he didn't earn it puts him in an awkward position, especially if things aren't going well. That whole thing back fired if you ask me. It very well could have been the difference in that game.

Should have made him run some stadiums. The punishment didn't seem to fit the crime.

Its safe to say there is prob more to this crime.

I'm not convinced this was because of some missed tutoring session since there were rumors about ZM a long time ago being benched for whatever time period.. but lets say I'm wrong and it was a tutoring session, every talking head on the Pac12 network including Slick Rick said this was a stupid and pi$$ poor punishment for that.....never thought I'd see the day I respect Rick Neuheisal more than JT...but that day has arrived..

You never know the circumstances.

If maynard passed the course he didn't need the tutoring session. What's next? JT benching a player who cut a class in the 5th grade?

We don't know the circumstances-it could be multiple infractions; he could be hanging on eligibility by a thread-so I don't fault the decision. What was totally f#cked was the implementation. No manager worth his salt would have done that.

Maynard sitting out the game was the difference, like giving Nevada a head start. Wasn't the smartest decision, I suppose. This is going to be a long season for everyone concerned.

I posted this in another thread but it bears repeating -- it's as if he tried to maximize the disruption to the team.

Here are the facts as they've been presented so far:

-Maynard missed a tutoring appointment in early June
- Tedford told him immediately that he would be punished by not starting in the first game of the season.
-The rest of the team (including Bridgford, the backup QB) was not told until Thursday or Friday of last week
-Bridgford spent very little time with the 1's in practice last week

This makes zero sense. It requires Maynard to keep a big secret from the entire team (including his brother), and it means JT did very very little to prepare Bridgford for playing an entire quarter of football.

Baffling. I guess this what Tedford meant by "we wanted to keep their emotions in check".

Yes, it had the effect of deflating the team at a crucial time.

Why not let the team know earlier in the week and give AB a few more reps?? so the team can adjust. It's almost as if he underestimated the opponent and thought he could pull it off.

It's amazing that you can give Tedford something to do as simple as mete out punishment and he can f that up too. He is a COMPLETE disaster and of course, he risks losing the team- which is not out of the question given his history.

Our current starting QB lacks some leadership qualities usually found - not always - in the QB position - IMO....

Truly baffling - if there isn't more to it, an incompetent move by JT. Hard to fathom.

If anything explains why the team came out looking flat, I'd say dumping this quarterback change on them the day before this game was it. Up to this point these guys were preparing mentally to go out onto the field with the first string quarterback. All of the practices were with Maynard at the helm. I can't think of a better way to deflate a team than what Tedford did to them on Friday. It was not fair to any of them, but it was especially unfair to Bridgeford who was thrown out there without any time to be truly prepared.

I don't blame anything on the players for the outcome of this game. It is all on Tedford. He set the team up for failure as if he intended it.

I don't care that we suspended Maynard.

I do care that we looked absolutely lost without him at the helm and that Bridgford was obviously not ready to play.

Tedford just doesn't seem like he has a pulse on the team or even himself. He has looked like he fell asleep at the wheel pretty much ever since he stubbornly kept marching out a limp Nate Longshore despite the team's slide in 2007.

If it's true he punished Maynard three months after the transgression, then I'm beyond baffled. Speaking as the spouse of a long-time elementary school teacher, he'd have an out-of-control 5th grade classroom in no time with that approach.

He was probably punished for continually pointing to his arm during practice after a completion at 50% speed.
