What Went Wrong

You may be asking yourself "what went wrong?"

Unfortunately for Cal Football ... a lot.

1) Cal was out-coached

- Poor Clock Management
- Substitution Penalties
- Too Many Players On the Field (see above)

2) Linebacker Player

- The ILB position did not do a good job of identifying where the RB was going with the ball ... as a result, we got shredded.
- McCain got out run by a QB with slightly above avg speed and gave up a huge TD... his hips didn't fly open to create a good angle to the ball carrier, he looked almost robotic in regards to his fluidness on that play... I hope he learns to play with more instinct in the future... that play should never have happened.
-Silver Lining: Nick Forbes should get more time on the field following this disaster and the sooner he can steal Hurrel or Mullins job... the better. Fortt is also a few weeks away, which will help our athleticism and toughness up the middle.

3) Rhythm

- Cal offense didn't play with tempo. The plays were consistently changed on the sideline and Maynard would have to audible ... This completely negates the effectiveness of the no huddle offense. Pathetic. Having pitched at the college level and over seas ... I know that nothing causes more errors and misplays than taking a long time in between pitches.... it makes your teammates fall asleep and lose focus (I wish Tedford understood this).

4) Energy

- The student section was embarrassingly quiet and the rest of the stadium rarely made any noise. It's embarrassing when the opposing team's fans make more noise than the hometown crowd.
- The D was not playing free and fast ... they were playing conservatively and as a result ... they were slowly burned all day long. It was depressing to watch.

5) Benching Maynard

- Are you f#*#*ing kidding me? The team found out the day before the game that Bridg was going to start? This was dumb. Tedford did not put Bridg in a position to succeed. Tedford... seriously... freaking pathetic, you really don't have your finger on the pulse

6) No Offensive Identity

- Have 10-20 basic plays and allow the QB to call hot routes to put wrinkles into place before the ball is snapped. If this worked for Peyton Manning (one of the greatest of all time), I think it could work for us.
- Honestly, I don't think the players know what kind of offense we run... if that's the case, then we're doomed for the season.

7) O-Line Did Nothing To Impress
- These guys failed to dominate in the trenches... as a result... our run game was horrible.

8) Maynard Pointing At His Left Arm

- Arrogance = The Mask of Lacking Confidence
- Zach, be a little more humble; your arm strength is average. I want you to succeed and so does the fan base. But... pointing at your arm after making a subpar throw that was caught by Isi and then Treggs was truly embarrassing for the whole fan base to watch.

What Went Right:

There were some sparks of light throughout the game:

1) Kickoffs

-For the first time in recent memory, the ball was kicked deep and the opposing team started inside the 30 on almost every occasion. This was incredible to see.... keep it up Vince!

2) The Young Receivers

- Treggs and Harper played fast and with confidence

3) #17

- Scarlett is the real deal. He was all over the field and physically dominated the opposing team...unfortunately... he's only one guy.

4) Bigelow

- He's playing faster than he did last year. He is also playing with emotion, something that Tedford likes his players to be devoid of. Although I didn't like to see him lose his cool by slamming down the ball at the end of the game; I did like to see that he passionate about making a heroic return to try to win the game. This time it didn't work out, but I think he'll return at least 2 kickoffs for a TD this year (I just hope that both of them don't come from the Southern Utah game)

Zach's arm strength is not average. It's comparable to Justin Vedder's. Vedder was more accurate.

Long beer lines at Tailgate Town

Oh, overcrowding on the east side. Wow, couldn't move.

I don't know about you, but my friends and I and everyone around us were yelling our a--ses off. My voice was hoarse for hours after the game.

Everything you list under "What went wrong" is coaching. COACHING. You could have saved a lot of time by typing COACHING and left it at that.

Maybe the new stadium configuration dampens the noise

Not being a college football coach I will not speculate on the details, and simply say that we were beaten by a better team.

Team in my words as being coaches and players alike.

Ditto. I thought the fans did their job.

On a tangent, does Memorial seem to be any louder after the renovation?

Glenn Parker made this observation on the P12 Network wrap-up show. He basically said that he's seen it with Cal for a few years now, and if the team doesn't know, nobody else does either.

What do you even call it (other than cluster-you-know-what)? The sad part is, it's such an obvious and glaring weakness to everyone , except the man who decides the type of offense we run.

It's fine. Your expectations are way too high young man. This is Cal after all. Refer to Ghostbear's manifesto on how to properly comport yourself as a cal fan.

What went wrong?; if I had to choose just one category, it would be our D. Thanks to our D, Nevada and its QB are nationally ranked at 42nd (total offense) and 25th (passing) respectively.
