I think we evaluate at the end of the season. If no improvement over last two years, then JT should be "encouraged" to take one for the team so to speak.
Would prefer he figured it out on his own and stepped down if that was the case, but really depends on how this season goes.
We have had two pretty disappointing years back to back -- if trend does not start to improve in year 3, then seems like it is time to make a change.

QUESTION!!!!!

If he "resigns" or "steps down," does he still get the remainder of his contract through 2015, or is that part only enforced if he is fired?

The only instance whereby a coach's contracted payout would be eliminated would be for termination for just cause (Bobby Petrino at Arkansas).

Under Paragraph 20. TERMINATION (2007 Contract Addendum):
"In the event Coach breaches this Contract by leaving employment...Coach shall pay to the University within 30 days of leaving employment $300,000 for each Contract year remaining in the Employment Contract as set forth in this Contract Addendum, inclusive of the year in which Coach leaves employment."

Later, in the same paragraph:
"Furthermore, for the period of this Employment Contract, as set forth in this Contract Addendum, Coach agrees not to be employed by any PAC-10 school."

Paragraph 21 sets out what happens if the University terminates Tedford. Those terms have been discussed many times before on this board.

So, he would never resign.

We are on the hook, 99.9999999999999% chance.

Well, that would be one such instance.

In Tedford's contract, the possibilities contemplated are:

Tedford resigns (underlying assumption is that he resigns to take a job elsewhere), or
Tedford is fired by the University without cause, or
Tedford is fired by the University with cause.

In the first instance (Tedford resigns), Tedford has to pay the University $300,000 per year for each year remaining on the contract plus the current year.

In the second instance (Tedford fired without cause), the University pays him base salary, retention bonus (now a Deferred Compensation payment), and his Talent Fee throughout the remaining term of the contract (through Dec. 31, 2015).

In the third instance (Tedford fired with cause), he gets nothing.

Okay, so I'm reading the 2007 contract. It appears to go through December 2013, with 1 year added for each 9 win season from 2007 to 2013. We won 9 games once during that stretch, so it's my understanding it expires in 2014. However, everyone is throwing the 2015 date around, which is it?

Oh gawd, and he got a $250,000 bonus for coaching that game against Nevada. UGHHH!!!

Okay, I'm like 5 years too late, but I just read the whole contract and it makes me a really sad bear.

He got a $1,500,000 bonus earlier this year just for making it this long...

That's one possibility. I think most people would agree that contracts are simply starting points for negotiations if the parties are agreeable.

If the parties are not agreeable, then the contract typically decides the matter. I also think that if Tedford wanted to resign, Sandy would listen to reasonable offers to settle the contract and be done with it. In such a situation, if Tedford was willing to resign in exchange for a largely reduced payout and the University being able to move on without carrying his contract on the books through 2015, I can't imagine that Barbour wouldn't listen.

This is all speculation, anyhow, because we only have a limited set of facts and we aren't privy to any discussions, thoughts, conversations, etc., carried on between the principals to say nothing of communications between major donors and SB.

Otherwise known as the '04 Washington clause.

Tedford got a 2-year extension in 2009 (after the 9-win 2008 season). That takes him to 2015.

1. If he has done something ethically wrong. Don't know of anything here.

2. Have someone substantially better in mind that could be hired in Tedford's place? I just looked up his record in 10 full seasons at Cal, it's 79-48, he's won 62% of those games. Bowl games in 8 of 10 of those years.

3. Yeah but Cal lost it's home opener to Nevada, at the reopening of CMS, in front of 63,000 fans. One loss is not very relevant, see answer to #2 above.

What's his winning percentage the last 5 years?

This will be Tedford's last season. Every indicator is pointing in the wrong direction for him and with the new stadium debt overhang he can't right the ship fast enough.

He had a great run here. I will mostly remember his tenure positively, we had our longest sustained relevant streak ever (or at least in the past 50 years).

But, he proved not up to the task of being a premier D1 head coach. His biggest problem was early success led to higher expectations that he could not live up to.

I argued on this board for him for years, maybe a year or two too long. When recruiting picked up to the point where we could compete with the big programs and win top talent from out of state, I was happy to give him a chance. I was even OK with the fact that we had some great fast starts, and then crapped the bed down the stretch. At least we were nationally relevant for part of those seasons. Now, we are not relevant at any part of the season. Not even pre season.

I want a BCS game, but I don't expect it. I do expect to not lose at home to Nevada, and I do expect to win more than 6 games most years.

The loss of Tosh to this program was devastating and I believe that sealed the deal for him. Let's move on and hope we can lure a great coach here.

I really like Tedford. In 2003, I got out of the Coast Guard and immediately began my undergrad at UCB and was a student during the program's most successful seasons under his tenure. Ahh the memories... However, last Saturday was embarrassing. I want the program to succeed, but, after Nevada I was more convinced that it ain't happening with him.

Please Tedford, prove me wrong!!!!!

I like our guys. I like what Tedford has done for our program. His recent years have been choppy. But the idea of trend is pseudoscience(see Coughlin, Giants coach). This was a tough game against a tough scheme with key losses from last year on defense. I see our team growing as the season goes on. Don't count them out against anyone. Including Southern Utah.

36-29 *55% winning percentage since 2007
21-24 *In conference record
*2-2 in Bowl Games

Answering my own question, like a baws.

We've been a sub .500 club in conference for over 4 years. Think about that pumpers.

I get slightly different answer. 36-28 record for last five years. 56% winning percentage.
Last four years is 29-22, for 57% winning percentage.

Tedford did have a better record first five years, than second five years.

What about the low APR? Could that factor into cause?

I'm counting every regular season game since 2007. Your conference record is off.
