Um, college and pro football are generally very conservative and by the book. Most coaches make similar, "gutless" coaching decisions. I hate them as much as you, but don't pretend that "gutless" and football don't go together in an effort to exaggerate Tedford's conservativeness. Football is run by traditionalists who very much like to do things by the book. In the pros it is obviously more apparent.
What you call "gutless" is very much hand in hand with football. Look at how often coaches punt on 4th and short on the opponent's side of the field. It's brutal.
Nice try, but I watch a lot of football and in that situation, almost every other coach would go for it, and does. Because, if you don't make it, you have the other team backed up against their goal line and you can get a safety, which is only 1 point less plus possession. Or you can get the ball back after a punt and still have the field position advantage. When you kick a field goal, you lose the field position advantage because you kick off and give them the return advantage. Plus we don't have good KO coverage. In other words, there is very little disadvantage in going for it, especially early in the game like that. But many coaches go for it even late in the game.
