Talked with an NFL scout

I have been friends this guy for some time...

we were talking about a whole bunch of topics last week and when the subject of Cal football came up I asked him what he thought of Jeff Tedford. He said Tedford is a really sharp mind and great play caller. However, he said Tedford would be much more successful as an NFL offensive coordinator. He doesn't believe he is cut out for the college game at the head coaching position. He says Tedford is not a great motivator or recruiter and that's what you need from a college head coach.

I know he used to be the OC at Oregon but the scout really believes that Tedford's style and philosophy is better suited for the NFL.

I know many of you are probably thinking ... "duh" but thought you might find it interesting hearing an observation coming from a pro scout.

Yes very interesting. Not enough to turn me into a Negabear, however.

I totally agree. I will always thank Tedford for bringing Cal football out of the dark ages but I also think that as long as there is an AD in place to keep the naysayers at bay Cal football is a sleeping giant. There is now (again, in part thanks to Tedford) no reason why we can't recruit great players and build a very successful program. Great school, great weather, great facilities, great league, etc. etc. etc.

A) I refuse to Jeff T bash after yesterday

B) But if you live in San Diego (or follow the Chargers) the parallels between Tedford and Norv are both scary close and deeply frustrating. If you are a 49'ers fan at least you get ONE game a week where your HC shows emotions. Conversely, if you love the bolts your weekend is taken up by "great offensive minded coaches" who look and act like statues on the sideline.

I was one of the ones who used to criticize JT for ALWAYS being pissed at Riley when he came off the field. But at least he was talking to his QB after each series and trying to figure out what went wrong. The only action Tedford takes these days during the game is the golf clap. I'd like to think it is just a maturity thing but I honestly think he just doesn't care as much (not that he doesn't care at all) and so he keeps all his emotions to himself.

I don't think you're friend knows Tedford as well as we do. We've been watching him for 10 years now. It seems to me that recruiting is one of Tedford's strengths. I think what's hurt him the most is his game management. I don't disagree that he might make a better NFL offensive coordinator than college head coach however.

Don't forget the hands on thighs "I'm focusing really hard" Tedford stance.

What would win Tedford games in the NFL doesn't work at the university level. That is, kicking winning field goals in last minutes of a game. Our kickers aren't on the same level with cold blooded League kickers.

Btw, I wondered whether our holder, kam Jackson, was partially responsible for the wayward kicks?

Maybe some NFL team will recruit him after the season...

Ack!.....are you f#@%en A a'kiddin' me?

D'A missed not one, not two, but three FGs by a country mile! However, the special teams or kicking coach should have told Tedford to get the ball lined up on the right hash mark.....if so, Cal might have had 6 out of 9 possible points despite the bubmbbly centers.......

The last snap looked a little offline to me at the time. Based on the shotgun roll-snap used throughout the game, I wouldn't be shocked if the long-snapping isn't part of the problem

Bingo!.....boy you think?.....a pro team to soften the transition by offering to pay some or even all of his buy out....Tedfraud's richer as hell and everybody is happy, happy, happy!

Wouldn't analyze it any more than needs to be, the kicks were wide...3-times.

Teddy does have Rex Ryan's old body now. Perfect for the NFL.

So Harbaugh's skills translate universally on both the college and nfl level?

As much as, maybe more than, game management issues his staffing seems to be problematic. He's had some good guys (M, Wilcox, Gould) but also some really questionable choices. Then there is the waffling on his OC, in part because he wants to try an option approach but seems unwilling to go "all in". It seems to me the struggle to find (or maintain) an offensive identity has contributed to our problems.

All his theoretical schemes where you need all 11 players to execute to succeed, also works better in the NFL.
College players don't have the time to practice all day all week, nor do they have the experience to have those instincts ingrained, nor does he have lower levels weeding out lesser talents.
Deal with it. Expect blown assignments. Mistake-proof your play calling.

Harbaugh worked well in college when he had an nfl line. Those roided furd lines set everything up

Very nice post cccbear04...in fact ne of the best insightful posts of the month, if not the year.....if Tedford would hire a line coach or recruiter that sought linemen like Harbaugh....Cal would be in the Rose Bowl repeatedly.....instead of the music chair adjustments that we're seeing...as exemplified with every tumbly bumbly snap from center.......(and #77 getting continually beaten by defensive ends)....
