Wide receiver play has been a strength

I know it's early but remember how we were so worried about the position and that it was going to be Keenan and a bunch of question marks? And even one of the question marks was supposed to be resolved by Maurice Harris. Has he even suited up?

Do Harper, Treggs, and Powe look like freshman to you? I didn't know Powe was built like a rock. I've been impressed with their composure, hands (yes, a few drops but nothing bad) and their ability to get open. Seems like they get more separation than the receivers we've had for the last few years. Looks like they run good routes and know where the ball is supposed to be. Receiver play has worked out fine and these guys being so young (with also Dozier and Lawler in the wings), we may have something brewing for four years (esp. with Kline one day throwing to these guys). This has been one of the better stories of the season thus far.

Maurice suits up, but has not played at all.

I think the freshmen are really just that good.

Completely agree, and to add on to this, the blocking has been phenomenal. Someone mentioned Treggs' block on the Bigelow run against Ohio State, but he had an even better block the previous week on the Isi Sofele touchdown. Some (if not most) credit has to go to Wes Chandler, who so far, has looked like an outstanding hire.

No, I think we can say we're stacked.

Pleasant surprise. Didn't expect them to play this well.

Young receivers with Bigelow and Lasco are reasons for hope

Yes, I didn't expect them to be so fundamentally sound (blocking, running routes) and dependable so early. A weakness (or at least a major question mark) going into the season has been great success thus far!

Unfortunately, the other question marks at safety and OL have been below average.

LB has trended upward, but still leaving something to be desired.

we knew that DB was going to be an area of concern, but one way to make them look better was to get more DL penetration and to pressure QBs. we haven't seen that too much yet. Miller had as much time as he needed to throw most of his passes--luckily he was erratic in his passes. better passers like Barkley cannot be given time to throw. they have to be chased down and hit hard.

It's weird for Nevada and SUU the oline was great at pass protect and weak and run blocking. It was the complete opposite for tOSU. I hope they can create some holes v. $C. I remember Michalczik was excellent as one of the few guys who could design run-blocking schemes to attack $C's D-line effectively. Hopefully he can get back to that.

I don't think Barkley has needed to take his uniform to the cleaners in each of the three games he's played against us. Pendy needs to copy what Furd did and blitz a LB on every play.

Seriously. Also, our defensive linemen may need to get more push.

We've had guys like Noah Smith, Sam Desa, Alex Lagemann, and Mike Calvin come through. I think the froshies have exceeded them already.

We had that Fab Five WR class and none of them did anything (Ainsworth played well in the short time he played). In fact I believe two of them were involved in the academic incident that got our arse put on sanctions.

A few minor quibbles: first, hasn't Dozier officially switched to corner? Also, while Harper has been great and Treggs very good, I wouldn't say hands have been a strength. That said, however, I agree the freshman wr class has been a VERY pleasant surprise and it seems the position is set for the near future.

Agreed. Overall I'm very pleased, but their hands still need to improve. Time is on their side.

Regarding safety, I'm still waiting for Avery to make his move. He's made some nice plays this season on special teams.

I posted several times before season start that we would be OK with wide receiver, because we've got an excellent incoming class and WR is the easiest position for frosh to step in and make an immediate impact. Not many agreed with me.

It's not like we have had a lot of receivers come in lately and have sustained success right away -- Calvin, Ross, Lagemann, Montgomery, Kaelin Clay, Carter, Edmond -- all come to mind from not really panning out too much (Ross may be the closest) to flat out busts (for one reason or another). Glad you had confidence and the class seems to be working out well, but let's just say it was a reasonable position to have a wait and see approach considering recent performance out of that position (Keenan and Marvin Jones notwithstanding).

...(correct me if I'm wrong) was't this year's group much more highly regarded? And I confess, I viewed Treggs as a can't miss from all I've heard about and seen from him, and his dad (who I loved watching when I was at Cal), and then just my sheer gratitude to Treggs for sticking with us in the midst of a "sinking ship" recruiting class. (F-you Tosh!)

Can you imagine the heat Maynard (or even Tedford) would have taken if the failed 4th down conversions were on them (Harper's drop and KA not finding the first down sticks).

Nonetheless, I agree WR play has been strong.

Wes Chandler is making a difference. I'm a big believer in the coaches making the difference and I hope I'm right here. Yes there is young talent but blocking, route running, getting separation, etc. speaks to some good coaching. Couple that with Chandler being a highly-decorated player and we can only hope that he is also a great recruiter (although I know there is more to it than just having the name). Every good assistant we add is a big plus. There are a few more to go.
