What's the melting point of Tedford's job security?

I know there have been those calling for Tedford's dismissal for years now (which always seemed premature to me) while others seem comfortable having him at the helm next year no matter what happens. But is that really the case? Is there a point that things get so bad (or good) this year that your opinion would change?

At what point do you think the hot seat would get so hot that you think Tedford should be replaced?

It's about football revenue. If SB thinks that keeping Tedford costs more than letting him go, then SB will let him go.

It's as simple as that.

A lot of people say he's locked for next year due to financial constraints. Would be hilarious if Tedford lost every game from now on and then when fans are clamoring for his head so we can get a new coach for 2013, Sandy announces we are keeping Tedford for 2013 and says "Well we can't afford another coach yet... so..."

When you hear people use the word "locked" or give definitive w-l predictions that either will or won't lead to his dismissal e.x "only gone if 3-9" gone if "less than 5 wins". You can automatically write them off as misinformed and wrong.

About the only "lock" is he will coach the Bears in Corvallis.

If we went 1-11 there's always the strategy they took when faced with budget cuts on money losing programs ... "Unless we come up with $10 M from boosters to pay for a buy-out we're going to have to keep Tedford. Any takers?"

Seriously though ... I hope we end up with at least a 5-win season so that we can see if Tedford can rekindle his magic with Kline, Bigelow, R. Rodgers and our talented corp of freshmen WRs. A couple of OL recruits to complement Matt Cochran, a more experienced Baby Rigsbee, A. Crosthwaite ... and we should have a pretty killer offense in a couple of years.

And yes ... I know someone's going to tee-off on that one. "Why waste that talent on Tedford" ... "Wait a couple of years ... are you kidding me?" ... etc, etc.

Less than 3 = auto fire for me, although I personally doubt it happens.

Like SoBe, I hope he hangs on for one more year, so we can see if this bunch of recruits is it.

Not knowing an average ticket price, especially when you enter the increase over that price for contributions to gain the best seating, let us just say it is $40.00. I think that is a bit conservative, but at $40.00 (total revenue from fans in the seats) and a $2.5M a year buyout, that means that a reduction of 10500 fans (six home games=$240) would be ample to pay the buyout. Can one imagine that decrease were things to get worse?

And if this is considered an excessive estimate, I think you have to consider all other sales of "Cal items", food at the games, parking, etc.

It looks like 5 wins is the magic number from the early poll results which would keep tepid support for Tedford and enough intrigue going into next year to put butts-in-the-seats (e.g. can Kline or Bford deliver ... can Tford get us back to his winning ways).

Of course ... if our cut-off is 5 wins then Sandy's is probably 3-wins. Two more and he's probably safe.

Anyway ... I'm not giving up on this season yet. If we can get MSG back on the line it could help. Heck ... MSG and Galas and we could be looking a lot better. Establish the run ... protect Maynard ... and heck ... maybe Maynard could up his completion % from 65% to 70% (I know ... I'm an optimist)

On top of that I seriously doubt our new coach would be getting paid $2.5 M ... so if the new coach is making $1.5M you only really have to cover the extra $1.5M in salary (or whatever).

Anyway ... I'd prefer not to get too far ahead of ourselves. This season isn't done yet and the team has enough talent to surprise us yet.

Don't know why more people just don't look at Tedford's contract as a sunk cost - add it to the cost of the stadium. If a new coach is $1.5 million and Tedford gets a job as an NFL assistant for $500k - the actual cost to fire Tedford is $1 million per. This $1 million (with a successful coach) will be covered with increased attendance - so:

The cost to Fire Tedford at the end of the season is $0!

It's the concept that's important here, not the numbers per se.

You've got it right, SmellinRoses.

At the moment, it looks like a bell-shaped curve. The cutoff being 5, either way.

While I changed my opinion on keeping Tedford, I have to factor in injuries to key players, on the road losses to two top teams - the second one motivated to recapture its luster after a loss - and poor QB play. Healthy players at LT, DL, loss of several players at LB, tOSU and Trojans, and Zach Maynard not seeing open receivers might have made a difference.

Contra: every team suffers injuries; whoever scheduled tOSU and USC back to back on the road ought to be fired; and Zach is inconsistent - good one week, bad the next.

Where do we go from here?

I think this is circumstance and not deliberate.

The OSU date was set in consultation with Ohio State either when the contract was signed or shortly afterwards and
The Pac-12 schedule for this season wasn't set until this past January (IIRC). The Pac-12 office sets the Master Conference Schedule.

I can't believe 5 people said he should be fired even if he wins 8 straight (it'd actually probably be 9 with a 10-3 finish after the Pac-12 CG) and we make the Rose Bowl. Yes, that is not going to happen, but you defeat the point of the exercise if that is your argument.

Seriously ... it won't happen but if it did? I can't imagine they'd still want him to go. I could be wrong. I guess it is a sign of how frustrated some fans are though.
