Interesting idea being floated between the p12 and b12 to use the fiesta as a rotating replacement 'home' option in the years the Rose or Champions Bowl host a playoff. Fiesta is in a bit of trouble since it lost the B12 tie in, and now it's pretty much up to every conference to make their own bowl deals.
Specifics aren't apparent, but I'm thinking if there are 6 semi sites rotated, that's every three years for each site, so the fiesta could get the p12 one year, b12 another and semi in the third. The question is whether the Rose/Champions would play semis at the same frequency as the other sites (there more money for the affiliated conferneces if they DONT). A split Fiesta could even out the yearly money for the B12 and P12 since they Rose/Champions won't have the $40 million payout in the years they host the semis.
The proposes opponent? A best of the rest team from the Big East, MWC, ConfUSA, SunBelt and MAC. That's a big step down for teh Big East, but not too unexpected.
The Big Ten and SEC and ND are trying to do a similar deal with the Orange Bowl... not sure how the teams would be determined in that one with ND in the mix too. Weird for them to want to also play versus the ACC in the bowl with the new agreement to play 5 games yearly.
Nothing yet guarantees the game to happen at all, or be hosted by the Fiesta Bowl, but it would be really good for the P12 to get another big payout from a stadium located out west. Since it appears to be every bowl to itself, other big bowls will probably pull east coast teams (BigT, SEC, Big12, ACC?) since there will be two more sites added to the 4 current BCS bowl to make the 6 bowl rotation. Who doesn't see those being in the east - New Olreans/Dallas and Atlanta are the top ones mentioned... The Niners Stadium would be badass and brand new in 2014, but it seems too far a trip for everyone in the east.
