JT,
Before the vitriol (and the season) get's out of hand, I wanted to send out a public thanks to you for your contributions to Cal football. Although I have no doubt that you will work your tail off through the very end of this season, the realist's among us already see what is increasingly becoming inevitable. This will probably be your last season as Cal's HC.
With that said, I'd like to thank you for taking the over the program at the time that you did and elevating it to a better state. I (among many) had hoped that you would progress into a legendary coach with a lifetime of success and tenure here and that is apparently not going to be the case. But I do acknowledge that you inherited a program with no expectations, subpar facilities and that was on probation for institutional control issues that you had no part of. None of these are problems anymore and I want to give credit where credit is due, you changed that. Even our fiercest rivals can't use the facilities argument against us, nor do they accuse us of rules violations. By all accounts, you played a critical role in getting our new facilities built and you run a clean program. There is no doubt in my mind that in 2001 you were the right coach for Cal at that time. It's unfortunate that may no longer be the case, but I will never look back at your initial hire as anything but the right man for the job at the right time (much like your former colleague on the basketball side, Ben Braun was the right man to navigate Cal through the post-Bozeman era).
I'll admit, I'm not looking forward to the rest of this season which is why I'm saying my thank-you's to you now. What is becoming readily apparent is that the program and you are no longer a good match and both will need to go their separate ways at year-end. I'm sure that you will wish your successor here the best of luck b/c that seems to be the kind of person that that you are and in turn, I'll be pulling for you in your next endeavor (as long as you aren't coaching against Cal).
Signed,
