So, a guy from our UK office came out for three months, and we have been talking a lot about various activities he "cant miss" including HYW1, Yosemite, Tahoe, Alcatraz, etc etc.

He has never been to the US, and has not seen a US sport event...

So, I brought him to the game, (after I realized how unique college sports is in the world). We walked the campus showing him all the awesome that is UC, then watched the Band play, explained the rivalry between Cal and UCLA (he pointed out that they are clearly an inferior imitation) marched up, explained home-coming, wandered around the stadium, showed the fault, and then Cal played well (WTF?) and the stadium was loud and fully a "College football experience."

Extra "Tradition Points" for having my Grandpa, cousins, folks, siblings, aunt and uncle, etc. sitting with us... drives home WHY college sports are so big, IMHO.

What timing for the team to get a HUGE win against a rival, too

Awesome Game for a first timer. Perfect game to show the pageantry and rivalry that goes with the sport...

I took a German friend of mine who was a visiting student at the time to the Major Bummer down at the Rose Bowl in 2007. Glad to hear your show and tell experience went better.

Nice! Thanks for sharing--I assume he was suitably impressed?

He was pretty amazed by the entire thing, including the actual school (we took a long while to explain everything from Library size, to elements, to what happens in each building to civil rights and free speech). He was high fiving people, yelling, etc.

At the end he said his favorite cheer was Bear Territory. (!)

He is going to the 49rs bills game today, so I will come back monday with his report on College vs Pro.

College vs Pro.

Pro is so sterile. Even though so many of them happen to us, I love the inevitable screw-ups in the college game. There is much more of an anything can happen feel. and then the passion... at the college level people just seem to care much more.

Nor do we have to worry about some college team up and moving out of town for a new stadium.

Watch this video:

British comedian Stephen Fry -- Hugh Laurie's old comedy partner -- did a documentary series where he visited all 50 states.

Sounds like he's a good luck charm for Bay Area teams.

Any plans to visit Cincinnati? Nevermind Oakland
