Was pleasantly surprised and pleased to see Garrett Cross attend the game as a 1LT with the Marine Corps. If I remember, he briefly had a cup of coffee with the Green Bay Packers. Glad to see he's moved-on and serving his country.

Does he have his Cal degree? If not, maybe he can use the GI Bill to finish up?

Since you need at least a Bachelors to be a commissioned officer, and battlefield commissions pretty much no longer exist, I assume he must have finished his degree.

Without Cross we would not have gotten Aaron Rodgers, or the Rigsbee bros.

If I remember correctly, he came back to Cal after being cut by the Packers.

I can't recall whether it was to finish his BA or whether it was to start a Masters program.

But I think I remember that he joined the Rugby team and won a national championship there.

Great Cal Bear!

If I recall correctly, and I could be wrong, I think he actually just left Packers camp after a couple days saying his passion was not for football. Clearly, his passion was for more of a fulfilling life and he seems to have achieved that. He probably had no chance of a big NFL career, but I thought he would make someone's practice squad at the very least.

He was not cut by the Packers. They liked him They were disappointed when he gave up wanting to play pro.

They have (or had) some slots for people who are close to completing their degree. I believe the idea is that one can quickly complete the degree. In addition to that, there are some slots for enlisted personnel to directly attend OCS.

I remember once upon a time one only had to have an associates degree to be eligible for OCS. A fellow HS classmate intended on going to a JC for an AA, maybe 5 years as an officer, followed by completion of a bachelors degree at least partially paid under the GI Bill.

Much of it depends on the incentive programs that are available and the slots available. OCS and ROTC are the main pipelines to receiving a commission, OCS you can be slotted provided you pass all the qualifiers and are on course to earning your degree either from a JC or, university. Again, depends on how desperate the services are, usually seeking those studying professional degrees: engineering, physics, medicine, law.
