Yep. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Their offensive and defensive linemen...
Their linebackers, tight ends and running backs...
None of them especially fast, but all massive, with super human strength (at least that's how it looked to me).

Quarterbacks? WRs? DBs? Nothing special.

Gotta be the 'roids.

Accusations without evidence, after having one's you-know-what kicked, equals pathetic.

Very, very weak.

Not only that but I just looked at both rosters....there is not that much weight differential except maybe at the LB position. Besides, anyone who actually works out which doesn't seem like many here can generally spot steroid tell tale signs....we just got our butts kicked plain and simple cause we are a confused and undisciplined lot with a HC who has lost control.

I was curious to see if you were right.

'furd Cal
LT Yankey,D 6'5" 301 lbs Rigsbee, Tyler 6'5" 290 lbs
LG Wilkes,K 6'3" 290 Rigsbee, Jordan 6'4" 306
C Schwartzstein 6'3" 290 Schwenke, Brian 6'4" 300
RG Danser,K 6'6" 298 Adcock, Chris 6'3" 300
RT Fleming,C 6'6" 314 Summers-Gavin 6'4" 300

'furd Cal
DE Anderson,H 6'6" 278 Tipoti, Aaron 6'2" 280
DE Gardner,B 6'4" 275 Coleman, Deandr 6'5" 309
NG Payne, Kendrick 6'2" 280

OLB Murphy,T 6'6" 261 McCain, 6'6" 225
OLB Thomas,C 6'4" 248 Broussard 6'3" 246

ILB Tarpley,AJ 6'2" 238 Forbes, 6'1" 236
ILB Skov 6'3" 242 Mullins 6'0" 225

On offense, it doesn't seem like a huge weight differential but it's notable that at RG and RT they have BIG/TALL dudes (both 6'6").

It's sort of the same story on defense. Tipoti and Payne only come in at 6'2" versus 6'4" and 6'6" on 'furd. Coleman at 6'5" is comparable.

At OLB, McCain is a bit underweight. At ILB the weights are similar but, again, their guys are taller.

Whether it makes a difference or not is debatable and who knows if their listed weights are accurate but, on average, their players (as listed here) seem to be 1-3" taller.

For some reason, Stanfurd players look big and Cal players looked skinny.

There is saying that if you want to look thin, you wear darker color. It must be the color of the uniform.

having seen the Furd kids several times in person, they are tall (the TE's are really tall), but not that wide for football players. You can't take a pill for height, but you can sure recruit it. They played a lot with two TEs and a fullback who is built like a TE (and was recruited as a TE). That is about formations and strategy. You can't take a pill for that either.

Maybe it's the white unis but Furd's linemen do look bigger or artificially enhanced.

Otherwise, look at the past programs that roided their linemen, like Nebraska, UW and a few others and look specifically how the line man look. Sorta puffy, can't put a phrase to it but the Furd linemen share a look of Nebraska.

Anabolic steroids will put on muscle and at the same time reduce your bodyfat composition big time.....the puffy look is simply from eating a ton of food, probably steak and potatoes in those days. Strength and Conditioning science is miles ahead of what it was back in the days of Nebraska and Oklahoma kids doing roids...it made them stronger and more muscular but the "bigger" part was simply calorie overload. Steroids make you look like a bodybuilder, not a powerlifter unless you eat that way.

Felt the sameway the last couple of years - roiders, no doubt.

Without naming names, I know former Cal players that juiced... it is not even an unusual thing I would claim.

One thing I always wondered was: why are our roided freaks always less capable than theirs, damnit!

in addition to the advancements of 'science' behind muscle building. There is equally, if not more science behind PEDs. Fact, Not all PEDs will make you look like a body builder regardless of diet.

But isn't the idea of linemen bulking up the same as in the past? Yes they want muscle mass for strength but linemen also want bulk and few are ever super cut and buff. I'm not a roid or conditioning expert but many linemen, even NFLers, can't keep that much weight on, let alone a 20 y.o. with a 20 y.o. metabolism. I'm under the assumption many linemen have to calorie load to keep on the pounds.

Would you say that about those who lost to Lance Armstrong?

I don't know if the Jr Farm players juice, but the thought at least has to cross your mind.

I don't think it was steroids, guys. I think it was Ritalin. Those guys in white seemed to know what they were doing!

hmmm .... extend the "argument" ... Nevada and ASU won because of drugs rather than Cal losing due to incompetent coaching ... blaming 'roids for the debacle in Strawberry Canyon is beyond sunshining ... lay off the chemicals you guys who look for the most absurd excuses to justify Cal's absurd, worsening coaching incompetence.

I think they take this drug our players don't take, it's call coaching and it is definitely performance enhancing!

That is true and I really meant looking more like a bodybuilder, not that you'd look just like one..but in the doses that a lineman would take them for strength, you're still gonna look freakish compared to the doses a MLB pitcher might take for recovery etc.....

I agree with you, but with regard to the Jr Farm, consider this: their OL was small and weak. Along comes Harbaugh and one year later he's got as big, strong and fast an OL as there is in college fb. The thought never crossed your mind?

I'm not citing it as a cover for JT and what he has made of the program. I just think that the Jr Farm has "compounded the felony" with regard to the Big Game.

but I have observed that many good teams with new coaches get bigger and stronger. I first saw this at DLS (yes, a high school). I see Alabama, Notre Dame and Stanfurd all look bigger when the new coach arrives. I know at DLS there was a culture of not just doing the required weight workouts but to put in extra time over the course of the 4 years in order to get much bigger and stronger. And all the kids were taking some sort of legal supplements (don't know what they were). I saw these scrawny freshmen in my son's class get huge (for high school kids) during their four years. They also get faster due to a strict regimen of speed training to compliment the weight training.
I read about Harbaugh instituting this same sort of mindset at Stanfurd and saw the same results: kids getting huge. To my eye Notre Dame looks bigger and more muscular than before and their coach Kelly talks about being tough every time I hear him.

Bottomline: I think the simple (legal) answer is that head coaches can inspire players to get bigger and stronger and faster and it is this mindset and not illegal drugs that account for the added speed and power.

My two cents.

What a pathetic thread. Is it really this hard for our fans to realize that the Stanford players appear bigger because they were recruited to play a physical brand of football? Meanwhile, our boys were recruited by a coach who instills zero toughness and has no offensive or defensive identity? Give me a break.

Exactly.

Juicing happens at this level on just about every major school.

Furd was just better yesterday.

Steroids can't account for the sheer number of whiffed blocks and missed assignments our OL produced. It looked more like our guys were on depressants or muscle relaxers.

I think this thread started out tongue and cheek (like my Ritalin comment) but people are so depressed they don't see the joke.
