"Losing top recruiter Tosh Lupoi someone who defines Cal football in a lateral move to Washington this offseason was an ominous sign of where the program is headed, and losing to Stanford three years in a row and four out of the last six seasons doesn't help either."

do alot of national sports writers think this ? alright then hmm k

no, losing lupoi doesn't define us.

simply losing defines us.

I don't think Lupoi defines Cal football. I think the circumstances that caused him to want to leave define Cal football because those circumstances would not happen at most schools.

whether for better opportunity, more money, better lifestyle, etc. You know Furd has had major turnover and they still have an identity and a winning program. Tosh leaving hurt because he was an excellent recruiter, and due to the way he left.

I hope we post that video next year. A decade without a win won't stop us!

Thank god YouTube didn't exist at the start of the Washington streak, or that video would have lasted 3 Damn decades.

Tosh leaving hurt because we could have kept him if we took it upon ourselves to pay him as if he was the most important assistant (because he was) and not to put the blame for the faking injuries thing on him. However classless his departure, those are the two things that made him want to burn bridges with us and even if we hired a person later on with similar capabilities and better honor, we would still likely lose that person down the line because we are penny-wise (Lupoi's contract) and pound-foolish (Tedford's contract).

IIRC, Sandy and Tedford fought tooth and nail against a suspension and the Chancellor gave them the stiff-arm.

This is just searching for meaning when things aren't going well. Tosh was a Cal, Bay Area guy, therefore he "defined" Cal for the purposes of this article. Sportswriters find things to write about. Who cares?

Exactly.
Also: the national perception is that Cal has been a winning program, and, as we hear every national broadcast, that's because of Tedford, and wanting him to go is an idiotic move by the fan base. So, then, you have to look for reasons for losing and then that moves right into Maxer's point...

Lupoi was just a symptom of a much larger inherently dysfunctional issue. Whatever spin Cal wants to use it doesn't hide the fact that at the end of the day Tedford chose the path he is currently on and it will ultimately cost him his job.

I read it as the Lupoi disaster defines (exemplifies?) the direction of the program. Which is harsh, but fitting. One wtf slap in the face after another, while the more aggressive P12 teams get stronger. (though you couldn't tell by looking at the mutts)

Though maybe I gave the writer the benefit of the doubt.

...when we are back to discussing Tosh 8 games into the season as the #1 thread up here, well that defines it pretty good in my mind.

If it "defines the program" then Lupoi staying would have made everything just fine? I don't think that is what you are trying to say, or many would believe that. Its not that big of a deal if Tosh's action either way brings about the same result...
