So I just noticed that Calbears.com is promoting a Gold Out for the UW game.

Smart idea, gold matches the color of the empty benches and empty ESP seats.

I kid, I kid. Or do I?

Sounds like something I tried to start a few years ago for the season opener. Look it up and some will back me up on this. Would love to see it happen FINALLY!

In terms of Uniforms (not Fan Participation) it appears that Oregon has been our Annual "Gold Out" opponent for the Players for quite awhile. I guess Washington is the reason for the season this year....

The video board had a message about the "gold out" at the end of the game last week. It said that 30,000 gold towels will be handed out.

Lets hope no white out.

We should be doing a white-out and they should be handing out Tedford white ponchos at the game. They would be awesome and come in handy if it rained.

A 'Gold Out' won't really work because most people don't own gold colored clothing. On the other hand, virtually everyone has a t shirt or sweater/jacket that is white or black. Much easier to get people on board for those colors.

Bro, if everybody rocks those Bright Yellow Disposable Rain Ponchos (priced anywhere from 55 cents to 5 dollars), we can do this "Gold Out" no problemo.

People around the Nation will love Cal's ingenuity....

$10 at Bancroft Clothing will gain you ownership of some gold colored clothing. Worked better than expected at Haas last year. It would look pretty cool under the bright lights for UW.

Ha, I was just thinking during Big Game that if all the ESP folks wore gold, the section wouldn't seem so empty!

One problem with the "gold out" is that gold is one of UW's colors, too. For Oregon and UW (and Colorado), it should be a "blue out". A "gold out" is better for schools that have blue as one of their colors, but not gold, like U of A. (I can honestly say I have no idea what Utah's colors are... guess I'll find out in a couple of days.)

As to what another poster wrote about not many people having gold to wear: Yellow counts, you know... You don't have a yellow t-shirt? Time to buy a vintage "The Play" shirt, maybe...

Don't they hand out shirts to the people who come through the gates? That is what every other school does.

Gold OUt is AWESOME.

I have no gold sweatshirts or jackets though...

Heh.

I know it's so high school, but I'm just going to throw my gold Cal T-shirt on over a long sleeve.

I'll do anything they ask if it means we beat uw. Just call me goldilocks... well, maybe not in person.

I think they are depending on the 30,000 gold towels they are handing out for the 'gold' part of the gold-out. Sounds about as well planned as a 4th and 1 call to Isi up the middle. Looks good on paper in the middle of the week. Not so sure it is actually going to work.

Why have a Gold Out when we're playing a team with gold as one of their team colors?!?! And personally, I just don't like wearing gold, pretty much every piece of Cal clothing that I've bought is blue.

It really doesn't matter if everyone does it. It pretty much overwhelms whatever color the other team is, whether they have a common color or not. Plus, those that do wear gold in the UW section, get co-opted by our Gold Out. It's actually a good thing.

I don't think that you are alone. The main color of the Cal gear that I buy is blue, with gold being supplementary.

The shade of gold that UW sells and wears is as different from our yellowish gold as UCLA's baby blue is from our navy blue.

I've also never really seen masses of UW fans wearing their gold. Less than Cal fans wear it for sure. And yes, I think I own 30+ pieces of cal clothing. 2 of them are gold. I own more grey or white than gold.

UDub's gold is an accent and more metallic than yellow. If UDub had a gold out it would be like this:

Yeah baby, it's the 80s again and SOLID GOLD rules the world.

Dark Blue wont' show up well at a night game whereas a Gold Out will be really visually striking.

To sell gold shirts? Anyway- this is a night game and who has a gold jacket? I have a blue and gold hat. That will have to do.

That could be the only possible reason to do a gold out versus a blue out. People prefer blue and most people own something blue, as opposed to yellow/gold shirts/jackets.

Pretty much fail.

I've never seen anyone walking around Seattle wearing a piece of yellow/gold Husky gear. It's usually purple (and naturally pretty repulsive looking), and sometimes white/gray/black with purple lettering. Like others said the gold is just a trim for the lettering.

it would be awesome if done in earnest, but it would require Cal to buy 20k cheap yellow/gold shirts to hand out to people who don't wear Gold. Sadly this won't work and will probably be used against it in the future, but a true gold out would be about the coolest thing I could imagine in a big Cal game.

And therein lies the problem. Had they tried to do this early in the season, I think it would have worked out better but a night game in November? How many people own (or are willing to buy) a gold jacket just for this event?

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea. My whole family bought gold shirts for the gold out in Haas last year and gold does definitely make more of a statement than blue or white but the timing of this is poor.

In regards to them handing out shirts at the gate, this has been discussed before. Corporate sponsors typically are the ones that pay for those shirts but most aren't willing to chip in their dollars for a gold shirt that will most likely only be worn one time. I would guess that they would be more likely to do it for a blue or white out.

Regardless, I am looking forward to the night game against one of my most disliked teams (especially after what transpired earlier this year). I will be there with my gold shirt on, albeit most likely under my blue sweatshirt.

Go Bears!
