Perhaps it's because I no longer live in the East Bay, but I would not be excited by Gruden in the least...

In April 2005, Jon Gruden brought Jerry Rice to Memorial Stadium to work out Aaron Rodgers.

During the visit, Rodgers teased him about being one of People's sexiest men.

The Oakland Tribune was embedded, but their article is no longer online.

$50 mil for 8 yrs is too big to dream about happening at Cal?

What was the buyout, and wasn't that thought to be too big to think about, just a few hours ago?
Didn't we just spend over $300 mil for a stadium???

Am I missing something? Gruden tried-out AR w/Rice, then took a pass, for any one of many different possible reasons... AND THAT'S THE REASON TO "MF" & Etcetera? Just the fact that Al Davis wouldn't do what was necessary to keep him makes me interested (he was winning and in-demand). FYI, FWIW; Al frequently did the wrong thing in the last decade or two...

He is on TV every week on cable's highest rated show-his persona then becomes bigger than whatever he was a coach. He has accomplished a lot in football, I'm not taking away from that, but some of the noise here about him is because he is "known," not because he is the perfect fit for Cal...

is one theory that explains Mike Nolan's pick of Alex Smith. As the story goes, Nolan thought he could make a move equaling those of Bill Walsh. Nolan thought that Gruden really wanted Alex Smith and also that Gruden would trade the 5th pick, and others, for Smith. Then the 49ers would draft Rodgers and get extra picks from Gruden. Of course, Nolan found out differently and ended up with Alex Smith. IMO, Gruden snookered the rookie 49er HC and laughs about it every night when he says his prayers. I don't want Gruden either. I want a proven winner at the college level, which is far different than the pros.
