Derek Mason. Young. Impressive.

Furd defense is stellar, on par with $c a few years back. I credit it to effective recruiting over coaching. Though Mason must be pretty good.

I have no particular opinion about this specific coach but I'll say that one or two seasons where a team's offense/defense performance is good is insufficient to make a coach a really good HC candidate. I think HC brings its own unique responsibilities that require specific qualifications. Personally, I tend to think Type A personality, super attentive to detail, great leader, great recruiter, etc.

The announcers made it sound like he's a legit prospect for us.

Tequila4Kapp has a point in that his resume is still a bit light, even though their defense has been so good.

The guy is good but benefited greatly from Vic Fangio's D. Inheriting a D and keeping it playing well is good...but not quite enough for a HC. Now if he designed and implemented the D, that would be different.

This Furd defense is fun to watch. I enjoyed watching $c in their heyday as well, even though they are illicit twin offspring forged from the seed of the same evil father.

I'd rather have Rivera, as far as defensive specialists go.

This. With Skov, Thomas, Tarpley etc. it is much easier to develop effective schemes. A defensive mastermind can't hold Oregon to 14 points without serious talent.

^^^Above^^^ and lack of DC experience. If he keeps this up for another 3-4 years, than he'll be a legit candidate. Otherwise, he's perfect hire right now for a non-BCS school.
