The process

A friend of mine said he made lots of money while others participated in the process. So what is the process and how long should it take. It was my belief last week that .....

1) We should of already narrowed down a top ten before the firing.
2) After the firing, this past week, we should of gotten a top three candidates identified.
3) We should now be in the process of making our final selection based on interviews that should be occurring right now before any potential candidates disappear.

What are the barriers to the process?

1) Logistics of location. They are two far away. Well just get on a plane and fly over if you are indeed interested.
2) Bowl game? Only an idiot is going to wait til after a bowl game to talk to a candidate. That's another two weeks til a month.

My worries is that we will become so methodical, take over a month and end up with the top ten of what is left, in which might include Chris Peterson and the a few other good men, who as which usually occurs, pull out right at the end, resulting in the hiring of Ron Gould as interim coach for one year as Sandy says, "We want to get the best coach available. we've take over a month in an all inclusive search and as of this moment there is no right candidate for this prestigious University. Being unwilling to just settle, I have decided to hire Ron ...."

Not that that would be a bad thing.

It's a University. Not one person's decision

Sandy's not an idiot. We had a top 10. The interview obstructions come with the fact that many candidates had games until Saturday.

Cal is keeping this thing completely locked down. We'll hear leaks of who actually interviews this week.

There was the hint that SB had hired a HC search firm. Was that confirmed? I thought that was pretty much the standard procedure these days. If so, we won't hear much of anything - they will be the gatekeeper and are much better at keeping things quiet than would a university admin.

My one observation is that, at least, there has not been a rejection by the top candidates to date. Doesn't that mean that there's still a chance? They haven't turned us down out of hand.

Where are the flight tracker nerds...That's when it gets really out of hand with rumors and speculation.

At least we can entertain ourselves in this way.

Great. Now, if she'll just listen, maybe something good can come out of this.

Listen? To whom? BI?
Sandy has done a great job hiring coaches in the past.

Given that Boise plays in Reno I am assigning each BI'er to all hotels in the greater Reno/Sparks area. Hide out there. That is, unless Sandy chooses to hold their meeting here

To the consultant (and don't think I'm naive enough to suggest that means she should hire who they tell her to. Any consultant worth his salt wouldn't tell a client who to hire anyway.). You don't spend that kind of money on a consultant and then ignore them or do the opposite (in this sector, anyway. Public sector people do it all the time.).

She has done a great job hiring coaches, but she hasn't had one with this much riding on it.

How does the consulting service manage all this. I am sure they are responsible for filling most of the big-time coaching positions.

As an aside: I have heard the Stanfrog has used this service with good success. They have an interesting model and don't seem to spend too much $$$ on coaches or facilities and yet have had great success (is this specific to Harbaugh?)... will this change with more time with Shaw on board?... will they meet salary increase requests (Shaw is #3 college coach on Mayocks list of NFL potential coaches)?

First, they are in periodic contact with most every HC throughout the year. They feel them out while getting an idea of their styles, personalities, financial needs/wants, technical knowledge and skills, satisfaction with their current jobs. This is just a constant process for which they get no direct fee.

So, they talk with the client and find out what they're looking for and what kind of job it would be. Then, they start reaching out secretly to all those who are in the ballpark. We'll never know about any of that.

Then, they'll manage the process. Set up screening events, depending on the client's comfort. They may even sit in on some of them. Again, we won't know a thing.

Depending on the client, they may represent it and mediate the negotiations.

Pretty much the same as any head-hunting operation.

The main function of the consulting firm is to do all of the preliminary contact with potential candidates to gauge interest. They don't vet the candidates in terms of suitability, so much as interest. This allows the school to interview only candidates who have made it clear through the intermediary that they have serious interest. This way, the coaches who aren't interested can honestly say they never interviewed with Cal and for Cal to say we never talked with Coach X.
