Can we please delete this thread? People visiting this site are not going to think too highly of a Cal education if they find out that some of us don't know basic junior high school grammar.

I do want to ensure that we don't scare away potential recruits. I'm not sure how we insure this, but the way people throw these two words around makes me wonder what they know that I dont...

You have heard of "dictionaries", right?

Not to be confused with dicktionaries.

But while we're on the subject: untracked. I mean, really? Maybe that was the reason Cal's offense was so sucky all year...they were trying to get it untracked and succeeded.

You want to go crazy?

Then move to the UK, and wait until you start hearing the natives butcher and desecrate their own language.

An example of this? I'd guess that at least 1/3 of the general British population doesn't know the difference between brought and bought.

No, I'm not joking, and I'm not exaggerating. I hear people say "I brought this at the store for 10 quid." At first you think you're just mishearing them, or you chalk it up to the accent.

But these theories go out the window when you see, over a period of a few months, several people clearly write out "brought" when they should have used 'bought' in a note or letter.

Your story has a negative affect on my respect for the British.

Just as long as we get everything orientated in the right direction. Or do we need to get more preventative instructions first?

My more good pet peeves.

I would take it even further to point out that "core" as in "the core of the team" is really a metaphor and not the root definition of the word. Although language being a matter of convention, the definition of core may now be extended to include this connotation.

Absolutely; "core" can be a metaphorical as well as a physical center of something. But the metaphorical center -- the "heart", if you will -- of the team is still its core, not its corps.
