Who would be our absolute top realistic candidate, who would command the maximum amount of money?

Probably Petersen? Maybe Rivera (less realistic) or Gruden (even less so)?

How much are we prepared to pay to land, say, Chris Petersen? Would we go up to 3 million? Over that? Four million?

I know there is such a thing as "return on investment" in play here, but there is also the potential blowback from a university (and a community/society) that is going through some trying economic times.

Thoughts?

Whatever our benefactors wish to pay.

It's just not about the money. I want a guy who wants to be here. I'm all for Petersen but if he's dragging his feet and demanding a ransom, I'm all for giving one of the 2nd tier guys the job.

Well, I think the key is the value of the coach vs the expected return. I would be fine with paying 4 million plus an additional 2.5 million in assistant coaches salaries (up from about 4.3 million) if you got the extra 3 or 4 million per year in revenue due to ticket sales, ESP sales, etc. So it is an economic calculation.

My expectations are that two guys would be close to that level - CP and Charlie Strong. If not them, we may still get a great winning coach, but the initial salary level would have to be much lower to temper the expectations of the crowd until the wins started to come in. At that point you could increase the salaries. Perhaps lower base salary with bigger incentives - like 1.5 million and a million bonus if you get us to the Rose Bowl.

Is it maybe more than simply an "economic calculation"?

How will the rest of the University react to huge raises for football coaches? What about the community (in a time when schools are cutting counselors and librarians)? Is it even important what others outside the football sphere think? I'm legitimately asking the question.

2.9-3.2 base, with big bonuses for BCS bowls, smaller bonuses for 9-win and above seasons, and even smaller bonuses for regular bowl games. max salary should be around 3.6-4

tell me that's not an attractive salary to come to Cal....
