He called it a "shrug your shoulders" kind of hire, and not one that really generates much excitement.

Then the anchor showed where his mind is in a classic Freudian slip, when mentioned the new coach will replace former coach "Jeff STANFURD"...

He called him a 'no household name'.... Anyone who follows college football has heard of Dykes.

Which means he is completely unknown here in the Bay Area... :headbang

They also mentioned that Dykes lost to SJSU. Earlier in the broadcast they ran a 5 minute story on Furd selling out its Rose Bowl tickets.

Conversely, channel 7 opened its sports segment with the Cal hire, even adding the fact that Dykes had the #1 offense this season. They had no mention at all of Furd.

Channels 7, 5, and 2:

They all kind of suck at reporting the news.

"Jeff Stedford" :facepalm

Which sports anchor reported on the Dykes hire? Was it Ibanez or Inglis?

Ibanez is a noted Cal hater. I look forward to his retirement.

And if the news anchor was Frank Somerville, he's going to get ribbed something awful next September by folks in our section.

Well, that'll have to wait until I have YouTube access. I don't have it here.

Thank You.

Not surprising. Ibanez clearly does not like Cal, but he does like Stanf*rd.

I always thought it a little weird for someone who "reports" for a Bay Area news station and was raised in the Bay Area. He attended a JC in Santa Rosa (according to his KTVU bio) and received his degree from Univ. of Idaho.

I interned years ago at KTVU, and I also know Joe Fonzi through other means. He is a really nice guy, hard worker, and plays second fiddle to Ibanez... like most TV anchors, he does a good job at trying to get pronunciations right etc... but his focus is always the 49ers, and understandably so, he works on two 49er shows. Treats people with respect.

Fred Inglis is another nice guy, works super hard, gets stuck with all the crappy assignments nobody wants...probably has the best college knowledge, but again, we're talking about a bay area anchor who is spread thin in general. Treats people well.

Mark Ibanez is suuuuper lazy. Shows up late, has everyone do his work for him. Doesn't watch the games all night like the other anchors, just gets the interns and producers to watch the games...he gets the highlight package at the end and writes. "AD LIB, AD LIB, AD LIB" in his script...(whereas the other anchors will actually write out what they are going to say before they go on the air) Knows nothing about any team besides the Niners or Giants... Cherry picks the best assignments, and generally is a douche.

Mark is also notorious for taking time off in March because he hates March Madness and college hoops.

Thanks for the insight. Your descriptions of Joe Fonzi and Fred Inglis only reinforce my perceptions of them. I like both of them as sports anchors.

I will say this about Ibanez: he generally does a job of describing what you see on the highlights, but it isn't insightful. Too bad he doesn't apply himself. He might find that there's an inquisitive mind between the ears.

Unfortunately, now I also have some insight into why the man looks like his wardrobe is stuck in the late 80s/early 90s. Oh, gawd, no. Why?

In a one hour newscast, they get in about a minute and a half of sports...Everything else is rapidly bannered across the screen at the bottom! "...and that's the sporting life...."

Is a "no household name" like a trailer park name? That could be what he was getting at, albeit offensive.

Creature Features with Bob Wilkins was the last great show I remember seeing on KTVU. I never liked their sports guys.

Are you kidding me. Back when he was at KTVU, Larry Beil rocks!

If he said anything bad about Cal, past or present, it was probably the brutal truth.

With Authority!!!
