"Obviously if you can line up and you've got better players than everybody else and play great defense and eat clock and win as many games as you can, that's a great way of playing football, too. The problem is, 95 percent of us don't have that type of talent to do that.

"So when they fall into that trap of saying, 'Here's how Alabama has won championships. Here's what we should do,' to me, that's the trap that Coach Saban would want everybody to fall into because, the reality of it is, he's going to have better players most of the time."

Tedford could never get past this.

See Stanford.

That's the problem though. Most of the time Cal has had better players than the opposition. Yet Oregon State, Furd, Washington have owned us regardless.

The Saban strategy should have worked for us most of the time, but the QB and O-line play has been so meek lately...

Lots of folks on this board have stated that Cal has superior talent, but the results???????

Cal does have superior talent - see NFL. Our issue the last few years was coaching.

Dykes mentioned he is familiar with our QBs because he recruited them coming out of high school, and that they were all highly touted.

Cal has talent, but no one is arguing that talent alone is enough to ensure wins.

Dykes also mentioned that we have to get bigger up front both OL and DL and that he'll be concentrating on recruiting for that. He also mentioned that teams start building from there.

He can start by getting rid of the body builder and hire a real SC coach.

Something tells me that the inherent talent of our returning QB's not named Kline will reveal itself more fully under our new coach. I don't think that means that Bridgford will show a bunch of skills he never showed the last two years, but I think he'll probably be better in whatever playing time he does get than he was under Tedford.

I am just happy our backup QBs won't stand around to learn hand signals, they're actually going to practice throwing a football.

Ok, let's see. Stanfurd edged out Oregon this year (27-23) but was blown out the last 2 years by Chippy's spread attack. Oregon went to the BCS championship in 2011, Rose Bowls in 2010 & 2012, winning the PAC-10/11 3 years straight. So Furd finally beat Oregon in a close game. Yippee-f*****-do.

See Oregon would be smarter. Oh wait, I think that's what SB did. Whether Dykes is the ideal hire or not, there is plenty of reason to be supportive of it.

Cal may have had superior talent overall but not at the critical positions of QB and OL. It's not just the amount of talent but where it is located on the field.

I think the OL just flat out refused to block properly for Maynard because of the tension that Tedford created. We'll probably see better play next year, for sure.

He gets it, no matter what system you run, you have to win in the trenches.
