Face to Face Confrontaions: Player vs. Fan - What Purpose Does It Serve?

A recent sub-theme on this board implies that fans who criticize players should do it face to face. Assuming that the University and the HC is stupid enough to allow such things, what purpose would it serve the player? It seems to me that this can only go bad for the player.
Does any player reading this board actually want a face to face confrontation? If so, why?

it's just to get people to think, "would i really say these things to the person face to face" and likely no

I think Romney is wrong on his stance on abortion, but I wouldn't tell that to his face. Could get lynched by his supporters. Doesn't mean I'm wrong.

I would totally tell Romney that to his face. I wouldn't tell him he sucks, though (that would be rude). And I wouldn't tell a player he sucks or needs to throw/block/tackle/cover better, though.

The difference being that Romney is a public figure who wanted to be the President of the United States. Discussing the issues with him is part of the deal. But, a college football player is a student who is using his skills and athletic ability to get an education (and/or prepare) for a career in the NFL. They are not public figures in the sense that Mitt Romney is, and they are also barely adults.

But as Davidson said, the point is not to actually go up to the players and tell them that to their face. The point is to raise the level of discourse here by thinking about what you say before you say it.

Honestly not sure what you mean. What difference does it make whether or not you'd say it to the person's face? When you are at a bar with friends, you talk about sports, politics, whatever you want, and say tons of things you wouldn't say to the pro sports players, the politicians, anyone. Same idea on a message board. We register an account with a message board to talk and exchange ideas. Not because we're drafting a script of what to say when confronting an actual player.

The difference between the bar and the message board is that the message board is public and (for the most part) permanent. It's sad that some people have such a problem dealing with their anger about college sports that they feel the need to vent here. This is not a sports bar. I agree that it's a place to exchange ideas. It should not be a place, though, to vent anger and bash players.

Just so happens I'm working on new internet start-up aimed at male-oriented internet forums. All users will be hooked up to multi-cam set-up along with high-output tasers, one attached to their mouth, another to the testicles.

At any time a user is online, he can be challenged to a tase-off, like a dual, for any offense, big or minor. Just like the wild west.

You guys wanna invest? You have to test it first.

I agree with GMP. Its very different than discussions we have at a sports bar or in the stands. The problem I have lately with some posters is the character assaults on 18-22 year old student athletes herein. For example, lumping all of the North Carolina players into threads of malcontent, lack of effort, deals, etc. Its nearly criminal IMHO to post that kind of crap.

It was recently highlighted when Gabe King, perhaps one of the victims by association, wrote a well thought out piece of work and BI posters start slobbering over him for being such a great Bear when he was that waaaay before the his tweet was made known and people were making false statements about him. For such an illustrious school with esteemed alumni, we often act like a bunch of fools with baseless comments and/or opinions.

The thread on KA returning is just another example. I really thought many of the posts were pathetic and I do wish that these posters could meet KA and discuss it face to face. I personally would be thrilled to have KA back for the 2013 season but I understand why he feels its time to declare.

Frankly these type of forums more often reveal more about the participants than their targets.

Perhaps engaging one's brain before the fingers would bring more respectful discussion or criticism of young student athletes and coaches. I'm hopeful it can happen here.

i would've liked a face-to-face with desean jackson.

one of my best friends had me take her 16 year old daughter to one of the games and watch over her. she was a really attractive young lady, but she was a minor. visibly a minor. i get that he was still only two to three years removed from being a teen himself, but in the middle of the second quarter i catch him flirting with her. his back was to the team, eyes on her.

so yeah, i wouldn't mind speaking to that foo!
fortunately, some friends were on the team at the time, we told em about what happened, and I think they spoke to him and another football player whose mind was on her and not the game. other player was not even third string, but still, where was the concentration and camaraderie.

Grandmastapoop and stillabear said with many more words and much more nicely what I have been trying to get people to realize. If you think a guy needs improvement say it respectfully like you would to his face. Instead these boards end up saying "he is a cancer" and "wish he never came here." Not only that, many posters rip players academic standing and classroom preformace. Thats way out of line. Thats stepping into the personnal area ESPECIALLY when that player your bashing is a SENIOR and that is NOT ok. That whole A parent of a Player PM thread was disgusting. That was the height of the classless antics these boards can become. I have bashed bears sure on twitter on here AND in person but it was always respectful. I keep it simple and leave to ONLY on the field stuff. Locker room Classroom those are out of bounds since everything will be second hand. I never will use the foul mouth comments some use on here on a bear I will own by words even to their face. I hope that this tread will at least make some think before they bash bears.

in all the volleyball games i went to I never saw them break concentration cause a bf or some guy. same at the swim meats, water polo, etc. like dude that scored the championship winning water polo goal was seeing Morgan Beck but her presence at matches didn't seem to break his focus.
maybe it's cause these teams were championship calibre, and that reflected a mindset that desean and some don't have. but the point isn't about flirting, it's about what the circumstances. in the case of desean and the other player it showed an immaturity with respect to the game and their teammates. his position coach saw him and told him to get his head in the game, but the dude was above reproach.

Well, IMO, it depends on how it's done.

If it's just "**** you, ____. You drop a pass like that, you don't deserve to be a Cal Bear!!!" then that is unwarranted and I would support the mods deleting such posts.

If it's "Honestly, I think ____ has shown a lot of ability and am confused why ____ is starting instead of ____" then I think a post like that is grounded in desire for an understanding of what is going on with our team.

Over the past few months it seems that even people posting the second type of post and STILL get told "You wouldn't say that to his face!!!"

So what sort of response did you get from players when you "bashed" them in person? And how did that end up being more constructive? And with all due respect, I think you have selective memory when it comes to your respectfull use of language because personally I don't think that calling someone a "pussy" or a "wimp" is any more respectful than calling someone a "cancer".

In one of your posts you said that you would stand up for a player because he stood up for you. This is gang mentality. You stand up for someone because they are right and you agree with them. If a player is forming factions without regard to what is right, then that is a cancer.

And finally, if you are trying to make a point that people should think more about how respectful they are being when posting, I don't think name calling is going to be a very convincing or credible way to do it. It makes it look like you don't really believe the things you are saying. Plus many of things you accuse people of doing on this board, you have also done yourself.

From all this, I can only conclude that your only real intention was to try to intimidate people from criticizing a player because he was your friend and you felt you needed to stand up for him. I doubt it really helps him that you are doing this. And it certainly wouldn't help him to have fans on this board get in his face. It could result in devastating consequences for his status as a student on scholarship.

All you are doing is drawing his attention to this board when he should be ignoring it. Personally, I hope coach Dykes sets a policy that any player that is caught involving themselves on this board will recieve discipline. This is very clearly a board by and for the fans. If I was fortunate to be a talented athlete and student at Cal, I would have way too many better things to be doing.

More "exemplary" posting by our friend jordangoldnbear
"This "parent" has no class and is an attention whore. What good does calling out the coach and players online do? Sounds like sour grapes... Maybe if this parent sent the rigjt message of being a fighter INSTEAD of a winny bi*_h then their kid would start. Only a whimp sends am message to someone else online to tell other. Wtf is this a middle school girls facebook? If I think Cal players suck I say it to their face and own it with my name. This stuff on here is gossip from a pussy to weak and scared to own a damn thing they say! Grow some balls "parent" and own this! Otherwise ur just being a jerk."

"Ahhhh that made me laugh... another parent of a player that quit? If you actually knew Zack and Kee you wouldn't talk **** about their behind his back. You wanna talk about Avery celebrating when were done ok. But to say that Zack and Kee quit is bull. You guys are so tough behind your computers. You wanna ask Zach and Kee first hand come to Campus and ask! You talk to other players like I do you'd know that kee and zach are not looked down upon. CJ himself said that BI people are idiots and don't know **** so go ahead and talk **** including that puss parent with no balls to call people out themselves. The fact remains THEY play you don't and neither does your wimpy kid on the bench watching like the rest of us"----Note: During the USC game Zach Maynard clearly quit on a 3rd down play when the game was still winnable. It was on TV and everybody saw it.

On Not Being a "Cancer"
"... I will stand up for guys who would stand up for me. Its called honor and this father and his daddy's boy wouldn't know what that is. Or anyone else bashing a guy they don't know. Only what they see from their bleacher seats..."---If KA and ZM had guys like jordan in their backpocket getting in player's faces this is not honor, this is factionalism and contributes to divisiveness in the locker room.

The bottom line is this: There were several times throughout the year when KA and ZM were an embarrasement to those of us watching from the stands. During the Nevada game, Maynard pointed to his arm and they both got in an officials face to argue a penalty that was clearly a personal foul for spiking the ball. I was surprised that KA did not get ejected. Both were seen throwing tantrums on the sidelines. For jordan to turn around and criticize JT who was the very reason ZM was the exclusive starter indicates a very poor attitude that could be described as a cancer. KA also benefitted because more balls were thrown to him with Maynard at QB. Neither one of these players showed much gratitude to Cal or JT over the course of the season. That is why I don't think they are a good fit at Cal. Nor do I think jordan is. I hope he leaves soon too.

I have been following Cal football for close to 40 years. There is a spirit to Cal football that becomes clear from watching the documentary tape of the Joe Roth story. Not everyone has to be Roth, but over the years Cal has often played with spirit. This year's team did not just lose on the scoreboard, but they took on an attitude that left something to be desired. The spirit of Cal was lost. I sincerely hope that, under Dykes, we can get that spirit back. And I'm not going to let a thug like jordan twist the facts to fit his warped sense of reality.

The older some of you people get, the more you make stuff up. Losing + Old Age = warped sense of Reality.

All the TLDR Manifestos about Spirit, Storied Program and other dogmatic, mystical historical revisionism BS.

So how do you measure voodoo, non-tangible stuff like "Spirit"? A QB running full-speed into a LB instead of going out of bounds? Leave it to the typical "never played contact sports in my life" Cal Fan to make such a big deal about that play against USC. Freakin' amazing.

I have played contact sports. Maynard could have thrown it away and still avoided contact. The pac-12 is very willing to throw flags for late hits on QBs. Maynard had nothing to worry about. It isn't the single play. It is the overriding attitude.

Very classy and typical of you to accuse somebody of being senile just because you disagree. Were you satisfied with the way Cal played this year? Would you prefer to have ZM and KA for another year if you could?

I think that the question is not intended as "WOULD YOU" but "SHOULD YOU."

In person, I have said and have said to me plenty that is unfortunate.

So, basically, the person is asking "Should you be so mean to someone?"

I dont think it is limited to forums at all. I think Forums just make it look worse, because it does not go away...same with Facebook etc.

A better question for a forum would be, "In 5 years, when these guys are all gone but your post is still here, will you be embarrassed by your post?"

First of all, you used the word "senile", not me.

Second of all, how typical for a Cal Fan to blame a 3-9 Season on just two players, ZM and KA. To any neutral Football Fan with a brain that disappointing record points to an entire organizational top-down meltdown at Cal, from Head Coach down to 3rd String Special Teamer.

Attitude? Our team ran onto the field with the American Flag of all symbols. They did that 4th Quarter "jump around" huddle during games. Gould with his Rope looked like he was leading the in-game rallies.

I didn't see a "losing attitude" at all. The results pointed to a loss. The scoreboard did. Losing was caused by a lack of execution, X and O's, a lack of talent at many positions from QB to Oline to even cornerback if you want to get nit-picky (Jimmy and Joes), but the Players never gave up attitude-wise.

For example, Coach Gould is a pure winner, but that couldn't stop his RBs from fumbling at certain times. Isi Sofele is a pure winner and pound-for-pound one of the hardest RBs Cal ever had, but sometimes that ball came out. I don't see a lack of "attitude" at all though.

"Attitude" is chicken-or-the-egg stuff for over-analyzing couch potatoes that see events second- and third-hand and then apply their silly notions of what a "winning" attitude is composed of after looking at the scoreboard. Another example -- Colorado Players want to win as bad any Cal Players in terms of "attitude", but the results are similar.

Here's another example -- the same type of quiet person is "pouting" when he is losing (Maynard), but very "stoic" when winning (Mariota). Swagger is "confidence" when winning, but "thuggish" when losing.

Fans just make up BS to suit and reflect their own values and insecurities. I say take care of Talent and Execution first and then Attitude presents itself afterwards. You can have a "winning" attitude to begin with, but a lack of Talent and Execution will leave you in a position where you are unfairly judged to have a "loser" attitude based on sheer results,.

Once again, tell me how do we measure it? Your handy, dandy "attitude" meter or something?

Well said. People cannot see past their own biases.

The innuendo, slander, rumor-mongering, personal attacks and scape-goating of Cal student athletes on this board is ridiculous. On the basketball board, someone said that Leon Powe was a selfish, thuggish player who "wrested-control of the team from Ben Braun"--in what universe?

What is strange is we see this character assassination over and over, often with some of our best (or not) players: Geoff MacArthur, Marshawn Lynch, Leon Powe, Desean Jackson, Jerome Randall, Patrick Christopher, Kevin Riley, Richard Solomon, Zach Maynard, Brendon Bigelow, Keenan Allen...

Having lived through Ayoob's brief tenure (and having been on campus at the time) I can say that I do not approve of the public accostation (is that a word?) of student athletes. In the case of Mr. Ayoob, it was very painful to witness. They already hear plenty from their coaches, and obviously want nothing more than to win and do well.

Now as far as the coaches go, I say have at them. They are paid more than the vast majority of us, and they are essentially paid to take it. I had hoped to lay out my feelings in a more succinct manner, but I've work to do...

I also met a friend of Riley who said some A-hole came over the next day at breakfast and said "what about that idiot QB" or something, and then when Riley said it was him, the guy tried to be cool and ask for an autograph...

kind of strange.

Heartofthebear I love you! For you to spend that much time making up those two posts especially the second one made my day! As far as what you said its easy for you to use words like thug and thuggish when you clearly have never been apart of a team. If I had pushed a furd linemen and got in his face for a late hit on Zach you wouldnt say thats thuggish. You and the CMS would be cheering. Idk why you clearly have it out for Kee and Zach. Family member benched for them? I cant explain why you spent so much time on me only and not the thread topic. We all have our fav players or in the case of the locker room our good friends. Of course some players standup for guys they know better or dorm with ect. The whole spirit of Cal thing made me laugh. Its easy to use magic and the unknown to explain things you dont understand. You can say a guy gave up or whatever you want to say. It does not change the D not getting sacks. The kicker not making kicks. The RB not holding on to the rock. Its a team game! One guy doesnt kill it and one guy doesnt make it. Or two guys. You can blame two guys if that helps you feel better. That locker room and those players know it was a team effort win or lose.

So you'd have to say that getting on one individual player during a game and telling them they need to, say, throw better is a pretty douchey move, huh?

You know how coaches talk since you seem to know how this thing works... Coaches say things like "get you head out of your ass", "hold on to the phucking ball". The talk is tough, and at times obscene and vicious to make a point. That is how they talk to each other at times. According to you, it would be perfectly fine for a fan to go up to a player and talk to him like his coaches talk to him...LOL...I think NOT !!!! You shouldn't confront a player unless you know him personally or are asked for your opinion. Players don't want to hear that crap from you or anyone else not affiliated with him or the team.

You wouldn't tell him that to Romney's face? What's the harm? You aren't allowed to have a different opinion?

Contrast that with those that have called Dykes a "redneck" or "scum" or "an SOB"! That's the kind of thing that should not be said here or anywhere because THAT serves no purpose except to show hostility or bigotry, yet it has happened in here multiple times over the last couple days.

But the people that say that won't say it to his face because they're little internet coward b*tches. And I'll say THAT to those idiots' faces when I get a chance. While those jerks know almost nothing about the guy they are slandering, we know plenty about the sociopaths that pollute this board with hatred and vitriol.
