From Wikipedia:
Quote:

Tony Franklin is well known for owning and operating The Tony Franklin System Seminar. His copyrighted offensive system has been implemented by over 351 high school and college programs in 44 states across the nation,[18][19] grossing over $170,000 annually from his consulting services.[20] Several college coaches including Sonny Dykes at Arizona, Chris Hatcher formerly of Georgia Southern and Ed Argast at Fordham consult with Franklin about their offenses. Pro Football Hall of Famer John Hannah says of the system "If both teams have players who are equal in talent, this offense is impossible to stop".[20]

After taking the Offensive Coordinator job at Auburn, Franklin was forced to sell the ownership of his football consulting business to partners because of a SEC rule prohibiting coaches from participating in a clinic not on the institution's premises.[19] The system became known as The System Seminars . Since his departure from Auburn, he has again taken control of the business and gone back to the title "The Tony Franklin System".

Does he understand he is now our OC? Will he continue to peddle his "system" to others? Or will he focus 100% on Cal football?

His last tweet read:
Quote:

John Schlarman to Coach Offensive Line

I assumed he meant at Cal. Nope he was talking about Kentucky, a school he last coached at 12 years ago.

I hope his contract clearly stipulates that he is a full time employee of the University of California and any outside consulting work should be seriously curtailed. It is not even allowed in the SEC.

Tony, I hate to say this, but you are either all in, or all out. Cal Football isn't a platform for you to sell your "system." Win football games and it will sell itself.

I'm pretty sure he understands he is the OC at Cal. Considering his statements recently, it sounds like he is 100% committed to Cal and even referenced making Cal his last home. I would like to know how this "Franklin System" thing is worked out. Hope we don't jump to conclusions (not saying you are) until we know all the facts.

It's great that we do have an OC that is exclusively an OC as opposed to the merry-go-round that surrounded that position for the last several years.

Keep in mind he wasn't re-tweeting this. He was presenting this as new information for all of the people following him. I use this as an example that two days into his new position at Cal he doesn't seem to have the proper focus. He is interested in sharing the news that one of his buddys got a new gig and it had nothing to do with Cal. He stopped whatever he was doing to do this. Makes me nervous.

Oh no, there's that word "contract" again. Sandy has to be the one to put in Non-Disclosure Agreements and similar in his contract. If it's not there, blame the AD and we know how that goes with JT's extension.

Maybe Dykes can reel him in, but Franklin seems to be half-Teacher/half-Mercenary and selling his "System" is one way to make a buck.

Maybe both Dykes and Cal can tell him to stop selling it and compensate him financially for would-be proceeds/profits that are curtailed. Give him JT's old house or something.

"I'm incredibly excited for the opportunity to come to the No. 1 academic institution in the country and try to also make it the No. 1 football program in the country, that's our goal," Franklin said. "To be able to do that with Sonny is kind of like a fantasy that started years ago. We talked about it and it's a strange thing, but we both wanted to end up here. I've been recruiting California for a long time and this is where my wife and I wanted to live. It's funny how dreams sometimes do come true."

"This is our last stop, this is where we want to finish," Franklin added. "I have no desire to be a head coach. I wanted to be here to make this thing work for Sonny and give the Cal alumni something they can be proud of. As much pride as they have in their academics, we want it to be the same for their football program. That's our goal."

Franklin seems to have juggled his responsibilities well at LaTech, so I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt. If his outside activities become detrimental to the team, I'm sure Dykes will do something since it's his job on the line. It also helps explain to me why Likens, a WR coach, was the assistant head coach instead of Franklin, the OC. With their success together, I think they have a good handle on it.

I also wonder if this could be a great recruiting and goodwill tool for us. If we have success and high schools and coaches start adapting the system, I imagine it will only help us in the long run.

Exactly. Think of the potential if California high schools start adopting the system. Things could get out of hand in a good way.

Not only did he not re-tweet it, he never tweeted it at all. That twitter account refers to Tony Franklin in the third person. So unless he has a Jimmy complex, he's not the person tweeting.

I alluded to this on another thread - in addition to being a coach, Sonny is a businessman as was his Dad. They know the value of a buck and are accustomed to being invited by football crazed alums/fans to participate in ventures/investments because of their status as coaches. It has been going on in the South/ Southwest for generations. Franklin is from the same world.

Admittedly, the "football consultant" tag is a somewhat new twist. I think, but do not know, that the SEC ban on football consulting is not so much because of conflict of interest concerns as concerns about its potential impact on recruiting. These guys will do a good job of coaching but if you think they will not devote time to outside business interests, you are kidding yourself. Cal did not hire Woody Hayes, or Doyt Perry types, who were completely oblivious to the outside world , studying film 18 hours a day.

I'm starting to realize that "Negabears" has nothing to do with pro-Tedford/anti-Tedford. Rather, its the ability of posters to find something negative to imply or conclude about the Cal football program. First, the worry about how Sonny got rid of the coaches, and now this.
At least the thread about Sonny's wife wearing red pants was in jest.

Oh man, you think Franklin has the Jimmy complex? man...this is troubling.

Jimmys got to think this over. Jimmy doesn't know if Jimmy is right for the job. Jimmy could really get upset over this!!

i'm really not following how this would show he's not fully into Cal. I would've thought by now, that people would stop putting any weight on twitter. I bet I could tweet something absurd now like "Tedford to be USC DC" and it would trend.

Coaches run clinics, and stay abreast of friends and peers in the coaching community.

Franklin sold his system to live when he was unjustly blackballed from coaching. Man's gotta eat. If it continues to sell, who cares? Sunk cost of putting it together isn't impacting Cal, nor is mailing out a copy here or there.

The simple fact is that you misunderstood his Twitter. Why be upset with him over that?

I hope he peddles his "system" to 300 or 400 California High Schools. We should encourage this. We want every up-and-coming high schooler to be raised on his "system" and want to play in his system at Cal.

I think you're referring to the extremists, because most former negabears were posters who criticized identifiable and legitimate flaws. There are plenty of posters that were fed up with Tedford, but are now both supportive and optimistic on Dykes.

imo there really is no such thing as negabears because it has such a fluid membership. If anything, Growls is just a place for anyone to voice their displeasure with all things related to Cal football.

What a fantastic opportunity that would provide for recruiting ... establishing relationships with coaches and players and having insights on evaluations.

That's a lot of High Schools. I'm sure it will prepare a lot of potential prospects for the "other" spread teams of the PAC (Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, UCLA and Wazzu) as well as Cal. We can only sign 25 recruits a year.

If Tony really needs the money, then pay him what he was going to make doing his Seminars and add a little bit more (or a lot more) as a token of respect and ask him to politely cancel any future seminars in the name of Cal's "exclusivity rights" to his Offense and a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), "company secret" type of deal made with him. He then becomes a Company Man with Cal being the Company.

However, if he's doing it out of love for Teaching, then let him keep doing it. He may be getting a kick out of teaching and spreading knowledge in general. Can't blame him for that.

Franklin's offense is definitely not the same as the other "spread" teams of the Pac-12. Each spread offense has its own wrinkles.
