It was going to be a subscriber only story but he had so many interesting things to say that I thought we'd share the first installment here, too.

By the sound of it, Cal fans have a lot to look forward to in 2013.

I like this part:

Quote:

"It doesn't resemble Leach's offense at all," said Franklin. "Basically, what we try to do is play fast and play with great tempo. That's the number one thing we try to do. We want to be the fastest team in America and we want to constantly attack. So we do multiple things out there.

"We don't go into a season thinking we're going to throw more or run more. We try to be good at both and whichever one is working, that's the one we emphasize at any given point in time.

"We'll use power sets with three backs. Sometimes we'll have seven offensive linemen in a game. Sometimes there will be no running backs in a game and five receivers.

"It's just kind of a deal where you get your best players on the field and the more guys that play, the more cameradie you have. That's the way we do things."

What that adds up to is not endlessly working to try and outscheme their oppoent but rather determining how they can impose their will on an opponent instead.

"Our offense is geared towards our talent and how we can best utilize them," said Franklin. "I couldn't care less what team or defense we're playing. We always tell our guys that it's always about us. Everything we do is about us, not our opponent. If we do our job right, we'll get it done.

also liked, "... we averaged 88 snaps a game..."

Holy crap that's a lot of plays. We are gonna score.

PS - thanks again Moraga, can't wait for the second one

Well, to be fair their defense gave up a lot of points so they had a lot more possessions to work with.

"Funny story. I was talking to Sonny two years ago and asked what his dream job was and he said, 'Cal.' I said, 'Why's that?' We both kind of had the same idea, that it would be a great place to live and work and a great program to be a part of. It's amazing how things work out sometimes."

Dykes and his family are househunting in Berkeley now, with a desire to be close to work and plugged in the the community and that sounds just about right to Franklin.

When Dykes was announced, a lot of people around the country said that it seemed like such an odd fit for this guy who grew up and spent most of his career in the South. But it's clear he really wants to be here. Even before the job opened up, he told Stewart Mandel two months ago that he wanted to be in the Bay Area. If he finds great success, he may stick around for a few years. And I think it's awesome that he wants to live in Berkeley. Just shows that no one (i.e., football fans and pundits) knows what the hell they are talking about.

Sounds like these guys really know how to build team chemistry.

Tony Franklin said:

"The thing about me is I never read a message board or the newspapers," said Franklin, with a laugh. "That's the worst thing you can do. The main thing you have to do as a coach is listen to the people who matter and turn off those that don't."

I hope he can convince the players of this wisdom. :p

Team chemistry is the key. Just as with Harbaugh and the Niners (everyone grabbing the rope), having guys play for ONE ANOTHER is the key. I love the emphasis on this because the IS what develops the willingness to sacrifice personal goals for the good of a cause.

I have to admit, I was hoping we could snare CP from Boise because of his record for identifying guys who are coachable and desire to get better. He has a history of doing more with seemingly mediocre recruiting classes. All they seem to do is compete and win !! Well, it seems we have guys of similar style and ideology in Sonny, et al.

I also like the philosophy of minimizing what opponents do and concentrating on your own execution !! This was a philosophy of guys like Vince Lombardi and George Halas ... do what you do with precision and intensity and let the other side worry about making the adjustments !!!

Thanks for the article Moraga...

I agree with the coach on the "star" rating system. He is excited he is at a big school with great resources, but he is not going to obsess about the 4 star rating system because he knows his job is to "coach them up" like Boise. I also like that he is directly addressing a big issue from the last few years- conditioning. That is why he will be successful and the kids will love him.

Thanks MB ... lot of meat in that article ... players who "get it" will play.
It also explains why Dykes invited his entire crew and why they accepted ... they have a system and the coaches are all part of it working together.

An interesting note is that the S&C staff will be challenged (or replaced) as Conditioning will be very important due to the speed and tempo of the offense.

The players will be challenged on many levels and that will certainly be a positive change for them. They'll learn life lessons as they become successful students and athletes.

Thanks for the article. My favorite part is where he talks about change and being uncomfortable. People like whats familiar and resist change all the time, but those who can adapt are in a far better position. I hope he can instill that in our players so they are better suited to adversity.

Wow, great article, great read. His quotes were perfect. I am happy with Dykes as the HC, but I am REALLY happy with Franklin as our OC--great to have a real OC--this is going to be FUN!

LaTech's offense ran a ton of plays per game b/c they ran them at a blistering pace (19 seconds between play - including time of play) not b/c the defense gave up a lot of points. The defense giving up a lot of points was the byproduct of other teams having to play catchup.

To put it in perspective, LaTech ran more plays per game than Oregon at less time of possession per game than Oregon.

Really getting me excited about the new staff! I love the quote that Cal was Dykes' dream job when Franklin asked him 2 years ago.

Thanks guys. He was very interesting to talk to and very open.

Another great thing is that often hot OC's are aiming to move up to head coaching positions but he said that he's doing exactly what he wants to do and is not interesting in being a head coach anywhere else.

Regarding the S&C comment above, he said they haven't determined yet what direction they'll be going with the S&C department, not that there was definitely going to be a change in personnel. He said that's Dykes' decision. He just made it clear that the S&C program will absolutely be tailored towards their style of play, including a lot of cardio.

For subscribers, part two of the Franklin interview is on Front Page: http://www.bearinsider.com/news/story.php?article=328

Franklin talks about his involvement in recruiting -which is in stark contrast to Cal's previous coordinators- along with his thoughts on returning talent and how they like to use the unique talents of the best players in their style of offense.

I'm just curious, did Tedford EVER say something like "our goal is to get the best players on the field"? For him to NEVER say that, or that fans like us would have to think hard for an instance where he said that, makes me conclude that he not believe that (which would be such a fundamental flaw and not surprising then that we kept getting worse and worse). He believed in his principles (read: his crazy complex play card) over personnel and that ultimately meant plugging people into things that they weren't good at. No 80 hour work week, more focus on execution, and even obtaining more talent, was going to fix this kind of flawed reasoning.

Sorry, no. We're all (most anyways) excited about Coach Dykes, but Tedford often talked about ways to get his playmakers the ball. Especially with DeSean (hell, DeSean is the reason he fell in love with the bubble screen), but also Jahvid/Vereen and then Keenan and, finally, even though it was lip service, Bigelow.

He also said this over the years about his oline. Most recently when he moved Schwenke to center and Galas to guard Galas' injury this season in order to get Schwenke on the field.

Yes, exactly, Tedford did sometimes talk about it, but just as often he talked about guys "knowing the offense" and "being able to do everything we ask of them in this offense" or being able to "make all the throws" etc. So I think it was a consideration, but there was a balance between "his system" and the talent. Basically, "the best" often meant most versatile (Sofele) instead of the more narrowly focused but exceptional (Bigelow) because of our need to be "multiple." Certainly his actions demonstrated that on numerous occasions.

And yes, Tedford tried to move to more spread the last two years to better fit his team/players, and even went no-huddle this past year, but he and his coaches were not guys from spread systems--basically Tedford learned spread formations from others during the off-seasons and then tried to implement them--but he never lost his run on first down no matter what the defense shows mentality. I give Tedford credit for trying to change, but in the end, he should have stuck with what he knows or hired someone who is an expert in what he wanted to do and let them do it--even if it meant kicking in a small part of his own salary to make it happen.

I'm really excited about this staff and the offense we will see this Fall.
