"Utah State: Sources tell me that Utah State defensive coordinator Dave Aranda will remain a part of Gary Anderson's staff despite an opportunity to join the Cal and Texas Tech coaching staffs."

I'm grateful we have Dykes, Franklin, Buh (assuming we will get the official notice in ~48hrs?), etc.

"Opportunity" is a very open-ended word. He had an interview scheduled today but Dykes felt strongly enough about the fit with Buh that he went ahead with the hire and the interview was cancelled.

Should be official word by Wed or so.

I sure hope so. You know I'm always positive about recruits and all the coaches we've brought in, but Aranda is such a stud. I trust SD and even though Buh's record is OK, I trust he knows who he works best with. Bielema liked Buh which says alot....the one thing Buh knows is recruiting in Calif. which is a leg up on Aranda.

Aranda knows California(grad. from Cal Lutheran) and has a Polynesian connection!

I understand he felt comfortable with Buh, but it seems odd he wouldn't even at least interview Aranda.

That is good to know, but I said Calif. "recruiting". I'm sure he knows the state but he's worked in Hawaii, Texas, (Houston and TTU) and Utah. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a stud but not sure he has recruited in Calif much which Buh has. I do love his Polynesian ties. That is always a big plus.

that doesn't sound anything like "he turned Cal down" if the interview got cancelled?

Sounds kinda strange considering Dykes and Aranda overlapped for a couple of years at Texas Tech so they probably know each other pretty well. Maybe it was a timing issuemaybe Buh said if Cal didn't offer him by the weekend he was likely to accept an offer from Alvarez or Bielema, so Dykes had to commit to make sure he locked up one of his top two choices. Something like that.

Buh is a meh hire for me. Aranda would have given me the same meh factor, but he may still have had ties to Hawaii that I would love. I'm not sure if Aranda is a great mind or if he's just been the conduit for two really good defensive minded head coaches in McMackin and Andersen.

Having said that, I can't think of anyone who would have been a wow DC candidate for me. DeRuyter or Andersen, two of my early favorites for HC would have done it, but they're not our HC now.

It seems like Dykes really likes what Buh has done and thinks they can work well together. Dykes has said and done all the right things so far and it seems like he really has a specific plan and vision for the program. I'll take my cue from that so I'm optimistic about the hire.

Maybe Dykes hates Aranda's guts and is jealous of his sexy looks? There's always that.

Dykes should have more self confidence, he doesn't look so bad himself. Hell, he's downright sexy in that Cal vest (then again, who doesn't look sexy in a Cal vest?)

I know but even super models beat themselves up with needless self-criticism. Let's not overlook this angle. I think DHR covered it on page 25 of their report.

While I was really impressed with Aranda's defense in the bowl game, I'm glad that Sonny seemingly got the man he wanted in Buh. The fact that Buh also appears to be a strong recruiter with California ties makes me really like this hire. Now if we can find an OL coach that can recruit well too then we will be set!:bluecarrot:
