*NOTE:

Recruiting is still feeling the effects of Tosh's departure a bit IMO, but hopefully that changes soon with the new staff. Cameron Hunt is a soft verbal, and if he leaves, it would be the first time in 9 years we will have failed to sign either anyone from the U.S. Army or Under Armour All-American Bowls, which I feel are the most prestigious ones and the most comparable to basketball's version of the McDonald's game.

As for the other games, the Semper Fidelis Bowl is still relatively new and therefore less established, but does have five Cal commits in this year's program. The Offense-Defense Bowl has been around for awhile, but like the Semper Fi game, is also less heralded. However, considering that they usually get third or fourth pick compared with the other games, they do a solid job picking players who end up panning out at the college level.

Lorenzo, Desean, and Keenan are the only ones to have made significant impact.

Maybe I'm just a homer but I think this shows life after tosh is fine. We lose our coach and we have the third best showing ever. We could lose hunt. We could add others. We will be just fine post tosh.

I look at those lists and they seem to be correlated with our losses. As the lists get bigger so did our number in the loss column.

Its just proof that the shaky team dynamics, lack of discipline on and off the field, and bad coaching/bad playcalling was getting way out of hand.

Some new coaching leadership with fresh ideas, clean slate as to who is a backup and who is a starter, and some last minute recruiting to fill the gaping holes (not enough OL, etc) and we should be able to compete very quickly with the talent we already have.

+1
Hope Hunt is able to see the improvement in Cal's coaches, but if he's allured away, good luck to him.
He'll miss the chance to be on the field in the Rose Bowl with Cal in the next few years.

Dykes, et.al., will land some very nice recruits in the next few weeks.
We finally have a staff of talented coaches, all with good recruiting experience and enthusiasm, who work together and are committed to getting motivated student-athletes.

Isn't the US Army game the most prestigious? Interesting that Bridgford and Hinder were US Army participants, but Klein, the most heralded, wasn't invited.

Sweeney was in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, not the Under Armour Game. I will add the game to the list.

It is but Under Armour is rapidly gaining ground. Last year there were some guys who were invited to the Army game but elected to go to the UA game instead. I was under the impression that Klein was one of those guys but I could be thinking of someone else on that one.

Seems to me that the Semper Fi bowl is misleading here because were it not for the addition of it, we'd be down to just one all american this year. Not that the kids have anything to apologize for, and I'm sure that in any given year some of them would be playing in the more prestigious bowls, but if you look at lists like this for other Pac-12 schools, I'm sure you see similar trajectories. The football landscape is becoming littered with "bowls" whether it be ridiculous bowl games by middling 6-6 mid-major teams or HS all-star games.

On another note - shouldn't we count Khairi Fortt as a 2010 US Army bowl guy? Maybe give him an asterisk like we do for Chris Martin.

Good point on Khairi Fortt. I have added him to the 2010 list.

It also depends on how early you get invited to the bowls. I think the Semper Fidelis Bowl sent invites earlier than others and some recruits accepted early when they got that invitation.

CalGaoTe- what are Kline's thoughts on Sonny and the new regime? I'm guessing he must be excited.

I don't at all. It's clearly delineated which games the kids played in and the note explains that the Army and UA games are the most prestigious ones.

Add Bunte and Hughes to the Semper Fi game. As for Hunt, I think he'll stick with Cal. I think they'll also end up with more Semper Fi guys in the end, too, like Cochran or maybe John Ross, even if he announces for UW today.

The Under Armour game is actually a little more prestigious than the army game at this stage though there's not too much separation.

The Semper Fi game is the clear #3 game but it's more prestigious than the Offense-Defense game was, IMO. They do a better job at getting guys just outside of the Army & UA caliber plus they've been able to lure some that were selected to the other games because of the Marines affiliation, like Tagaloa, who was selected to the Army bowl.

There really aren't a ton of games. To me, anything beyond the Semper Fi game really shouldn't count but the SF game shouldn't be overly discounted, either.

I'm surprised to hear you say the UA game is a bit above the Army game now. I guess I just perused the Army game and saw all of the 5* and 4* Rivals recruits committed to $C playing in that game ...

I'm actually not going this year, but I would if Cal had a bit more representation. Just don't want to sit there and watch 14-15 $C recruits play...
MoragaBear

If you look at the UA roster, it's all 4 and 5 star ESPN guys so there's a bit of inherant bias with both games and rankings.

1. Thanks for the list!

2. I'm glad most of our commits are playing in the Semper Fi game: for any youngster who can get an early "dose" of the U.S. Marine Corps is/will be way ahead of "the game" in my book. I served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, but after seeing the Marine Corps in action for a year, there is no other fighting organization better anywhere; and, just to be in their collective presence for a week can infuse a certain vitality that will never leave one...
MoragaBear

Absolutely. The marines participating do an awesome job providing leadership and guidance to the players and there's a lot of respect on both ends.

[COLOR="Blue"][SIZE="2"]I could care less how many "stars" we snag. Give me guys with the heart of Mikey Mo, the intensity of "The Pain Train", and a burning desire to improve and play for one another !!! I would be thrilled with teams like CP produces at Boise State ... efficient, disciplined, and highly competitive !! Coaching and scheming are essential components and I think this staff has the ability to put players in a position to excel. If that eventually leads to success at recruiting more significant "star athletes" then, so be it ... as long as they don't think they are ABOVE the goals of the TEAM !!! To paraphrase a famous movie ... "BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME" !!!!
