Not even close. He is great when he is at a glamour program with #1 recruiting classes. What Chip built at Oregon is more impressive by far. Did Saban build a perennial MNC contender at MSU? Nope.

Yeah because bama sure was setting the world on fire before Saban got there. This is the same tripe people used to say about Pete Carroll. Both guys can flat out coach (and recruit).

I have lived in Alabama and endured three summers there. Berkeley is a much better place. Did I mention that the degree is slightly more prestigious?

Berkeley degree is not something Football players tend to get...

You act like Oregon wasn't somewhat established when Kelly got there. In fact they have had a strong program for over 15 years.

This couldn't be further from the truth. We were sanctioned for this very thing in 2001. Bama wasn't.

Cal football players don't have it much or any harder than other football players. Our coaches failed to create a culture of accountability and our players didn't get it done in the classroom. That's it. Plain and simple. We are on the verge of new sanctions because our football players are not succeeding as American Studies majors despite all of the academic advantages they have as athletes.

We need to stop accusing other schools of subpar academics and get our own house in order.

I found it interesting that after the game, when being interviewed, both Saban and a player referred to the "organization". Very much in-line with the unsavory stories I've heard about big time SEC football...

Sounded like a pro team to me with folks paying gratitude to the "organization". I'm guessing they were referring to the school / university. I'm beat tired, but I recall both Saban and player paying tribute or thanking thanking the "organization"... Seemed odd, but not really I suppose given that it was Alabama. I already deleted it off my DVR. If anyone can confirm, or refute, I'd be fine with that...

Maybe starting in 2014 we will see something like a Bama v. Oregon game? I only wish it were Cal in that championship game.

For a while maybe. It used to look like this at USC, Miami, FSU. No other school has sustained it for an extended period although there's always a first time. In the end, the parity in the conference may be his undoing. FL, GA, SC, LSU are also loaded with future pros.

Never underestimate the amount of money being paid to players to attend a particular school. If we shelled out $50-200k for top athletes we'd be a national championship contender too.

It's a good thing these youngsters are in a bubble during their 4 years in Tuscaloosa, because living in Alabama is insufferable. But then, if one is ONLY into football, and nothing else, it is the place to be.

Cal has a few more things "going for it," besides "football."

The NCAA would love to sanction a school or schools paying for athletes.

Post your proof here or troll somewhere else.

These kids are FOOTBALL players though. Trust that the campus is gorgeous and so are the women on campus. I would be floored if there was a less attractive female student body in the SEC then Cals. When i was 17 and 18 it was a lot easier to think with my smaller head lol.

Oregon has the best record in the Pac 12 in the 1990s. Second best in the 2000, and best so far this decade. That is a run of over 20 years. They were #2 in the country when we got their offensive coordinator to come to Cal. Chip Kelly had done a good job there, but they have had a very good record over the past 20 year and they have one of the biggest donors in history supporting them. I do not think Chip Kelly's team is that good against a defense like Alabama's. But we will not figure that out until 2014.

Alabama also has a huge built in advantage with their history, the college being the only game in town, and the ability to get their kids through school there with a huge academic program geared toward football players. They have their own dorms, academic assistants, trainers, etc. They hardly ever com into contact with regular students - they are there to play football. Even the ones kicked off the team for poor performance get managed through the school and are still on scholarship due to "injury retirements" - Alabama has more than any other school in the country.

Saban is not going to be there forever. They will be good, but someone like a Johnny Manzeil will come along and beat them. In a two game playoff, who knows what happens. If the QB goes down during game 1, what happens? I predict that the SEC will not do nearly as well in the 4 team playoff scenario.

Florida and LSU are not doing as well as they were. Georgia is not that great. A&M and Alabama are the best.

The played ND, who beat a number of traditionally good teams, but not that good this year. The marquee game was stanfurd, at home, and the furd should have won. But those are the breaks.

This is the most embarrassing thread I think I've ever seen on BI. Makes Cal fans look like a bunch of naive, whiny, smug, pissant haters. Here's what I've learned:

1. We want to be successful but don't know what it takes to be successful and hate people who do.
2. We are mad that we aren't spending enough money to cheat as well as the teams that win.
3. A school in the homeless capital of the world, next to the murder capital of the world, makes fun of a state they've never been to based on cliches about mobile homes and rednecks. Clearly, there are no racist, backwardsass rednecks in CA. "From what I hear," (???) if you think you have a better education, but base your opinions solely on hearsay, you don't.
4. A school that gets to cherry pick students and has an extensive UC/CSU system underneath it makes fun of a public university that is tasked to educate ALL the students of its state. Yet somehow Bama, in a state with 1/7 the population, competes pretty close with Cal historically on #s of national merit finalists admitted. (2006 = 67 to 52 from memory -may be +/-) Yet this same Cal hates Stanford because of how smug and cocky they are. Oh, the Furdie hubris!
5. A team that is now best known currently for Desean Jackson and Marshawn Lynch (oh, and Butte Comm College's A. Rodgers) stereotypes the academic prowess of the winning team, but apparently cannot be bothered to listen to the intelligent, well-spoken post game interviews with Nico Johnson and others. Tony G and Scott F are a history, folks. Right now, Cal sucks in terms of football academics. Rationalize all you want, but that degree in Skittles and Golf Carts is not that impressive.
6. A school who puts Alex Mack up as a standard, can't appreciate Barrett Jones, who now has 3 national championships playing 3 different positions. Here is some info on Jones:
"Off the field, he has earned a degree in accounting graduating summa cum laude in August 2011 with a 4.0 grade point average. He is currently working on his masters again maintaining a 4.0 GPA. In addition, he was honored as one of 11 members of the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Work "which honors football student-athletes for exemplary community service." Jones won the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy, an award given by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame to college's football's "best and brightest." He is a 2010 and 2011 Academic All-American and in 2012, he earned distinction as the Football Academic All-America Team Member of the Year.[3] He received the 2011 ARA Sportsmanship Award and 2011 Wuerffel Trophy for combined athletic, academic and community service achievement. On December 6, 2012, Jones was awarded the Rimington Trophy as the best center in college football."
7. Of course we are not going to know that Bama's Accounting school is very highly ranked.
8. We will continue to insist that good teams only win because they get any player they want, yet Bama really wanted Keenan Allen. Somehow, I think if KA had gone to Bama, he would be a better person than he is today, and would be a team player remembered by all the fans for his positive accomplishments instead of having people say how much better we might be without him. If you think that is an isolated case, then look at the dynamic with Jackson as well.
9. We make fun of a team for being "organized" and having an "organization" that, I don't know, has a "plan" and "goals", perhaps working together to achieve those? Haas apparently isn't doing a very good job. But, "I hear" Bama has a good school of management, where they teach "organizational methods."

So, yeah, Cal fans, continue to wallow in your delusional loser rationalizations. Maybe next year.

The other thing we're not going to recruit against is the culture of SEC football. God and church are very important in Alabama but both take a back seat to CFB.

Who's wallowing? I'm not. Football is simply more important in some parts of this country and in those parts they're often very willing to put major, major resources behind it, like in the SEC. That's not delusional, that's reality.

If the shoe doesn't fit, don't wear it. The thread is sad. But OTOH, do you know any schools that just spent $350million or so on primarily football even though the state was in recession/debt and tuition cost were going through the roof? Or does 350 not qualify as "major resources"? How much are we paying a coach now NOT to coach? Etc., etc., etc.

Cal fans only ever want to be half pregnant, but then complain about not having a baby.

Cal Grads prove every single day here on BI they aren't the smartest people in the world, so that doesn't matter one iota.

Send all your damaging "details" about Alabama to the NCAA in anonymous fashion, Secret Agent Man. That might/should be enough for them to send in the hounds and launch an investigation.

There is no way they should be allowed to win Nat'l Titles if they are cheating and there is a way to prove it.

I don't get these recruits who dedicate their collegiate career for the greater glory of Nick Saban. When Auburn won the national title, Cam Newton got all the glory. When Texas beat USC, Vince Young got all the glory. When Alabama wins, it's all about Nick Saban. Even McCarron's girlfriend got more attention than him.

You don't think those players are getting their share of glory playing for national championships at Alabama? They are gods around there, and then they get drafted. They get named to all-america teams and some of them get to go to the Heisman ceremony with a chance to win that award. I don't think they mind at all.
