Still a month left to go, so there is time to make something happen. Looks to me though like SD and company are shoring this up to be a very solid across the board class without the big star power that we have had with some past classes.

When what it seems like we need is depth in most places, this is not such a bad thing. Also, getting us back in the game with JC players is going to mean some guys who are a little less highly touted, though not neccessarily worse players.

and the recruitment of two 6'-5"+ but lesser known wide receivers tells me he is recruiting for fit, not stars. I also like the work he's done on the Oline, if he keeps Hunt and gets Cochran, I think the bears have a very strong Oline base to develop from.

Can someone knowledgeable about such things handicap our chances of landing Cochran? Who else do we have a legit shot with?

Close to 50% from chat scuttlebutt. He likes oklahoma too. Force me to pick one school and I'd guess he ends up a bear but he's not a lock.

Ever since losing to K-State in the Big XII championship game in 2002, Oklahoma has been such an up-and-down program in Bowl Games.

USC crushed them in 2003 to reclaim their greatness....sanctions being another story later on.

Boise State clowned them in 2006 to become one of the most famous "David v. Goliath" programs in CFB history.

West Virginia blew them up in another BCS game.

Johnny Football ran circles around them in the Cotton Bowl and reinforced his Heisman stature.

Outstanding football history for OU, but in the past decade they've been like glorified fall guys used to prove another team's or individual's greatness.

I think if Cochran goes there, he disappears. Just a gut feeling. He could make more of an impact going to Cal.

SD is focusing on the 2-3 star kids because the 4-5 star kids are not a good fit? Do I have that right? No room for Eddie V. on the D line, DLS kids, etc.?

What the recent commits appear to tell is that this class is trending toward an average finish. That is good enough for now but nothing close to what Mora pulled off last year under similar circumstances.

We're not going to have any idea what Sonny's recruiting strategy is until next year as he's basically trying his best to salvage and improve this class. I am completely intrigued by what he'll do.

I hope we land Riley Sorensen... Besides Goff, Hunt, Bunte, Sorensen, Hinnant will be key to this class..

Sorenson has slidden down the board, they are targeting other guys over him due to fit in the offense.

I'm sure they are trying for guys like eddie V, but he may not be that interested. I know we are going after the 3 crespi defensive players. Definitely looking at providing depth on o and d lines.

The JC kids are more to get the grad rates up in a hurry. If they can contribute then even better. They are looked at as a 2 and out type which should help. Next year's recruiting class will really tell us if these guys can recruit or not.

To round it out, we have 1 on the Rival's 250 in Goff.

I think that one of the problems with JT is that later in his careeer he "sold his soul" to recruit classes with a lot of star power.

Some of those star recruits came with a lot of strings and baggage: KA, DJ are the most obvious. But let's not forget the recruits who came on board and felt like they did not have to toe the line in practice and in the classroom. Let's not forget those recruits who wanted to have good game stats more than helping the team win.

Many of those star recruits failed to really help the team at all. Some just couldn't cut it academically and flunked out. I won't even mention the most recent highly touted recruit who is not returning to Cal because of "grades".
Others just could not live up to their hype.

A negative post by you? What a surprise!!!

Yes, clearly Dykes has stated that he will never recruit any 4-5 star kid because they will for sure be a bad fit!!!!

Wow, you nailed it!! What insight!!!

Spot on but not surprising. Mora brought in better recruiters and also wisely kept a couple of good recruiters. So far Sonny<Mora.

So JT wasn't selling his soul for the 2 star kids who flamed out? I see this blaming the kids instead of the HC as just a cop out. A lot of kids going off the rails are just a symptom of a dysfunctional program. JT was the handsomely paid Captain of the Cal Golden Bear ship and the buck stopped with him. No need to drag the players down also.
