How long does it take (via weights and diet) to develop a college body?

How long does it typically take to develop a college body (via weights and diet), and which year does the biggest change occur? Does it completely vary with the player and their natural biological maturation, or does the position matter (Linemen require far more unnatural bodies than DBs, hence take longer)?

Most players need at least a year before they show signs of adding the right kind of weight and stamina needed for college ball. I don't think position matters since your natural body type will likely be determined well before you get into college. Nobody made the mistake of thinking they could feed Vinny Strang enough to make him the next Alex Mack.

Freshman 15 takes place the first 2 weeks.

The kids I have observed from the local high schools that made it to the PAC 10/12 grew into beasts quickly after getting into high school-- because they all obviously juiced. I am very familiar with weight training and I guaranty you they didn't get there the old fashion way like guys like Steve Reeves in the Pre Ahnold Era---because it takes too long.

I have seen a kid following the TCU summer recommended regimen put on 10- pounds of muscle in 6 weeks. Almost certain no juice involved.

17-20 year olds have their maximum Amount of natural testosterone and their bodies are primed to put on quality weight in a hurry. I just had dinner last night in Phoenix with one of my ex-baseball players. He has put on 30 pounds of muscle in 18 months and I guarantee you he didn't come close to taking anything illegal.

If you are over 45-years it could take a year or more. If you are under 18-years it could take you a year or more. Whatever you start with...

In a year or two, with a big frame and the right diet and lifting routine, you can put on a bunch of good weight. No steroids needed. You can do a whole lot with consistency and a ton of good calories in your diet (no illegal enhancements necessary).

The biggest difference is weight training that is available and required by so many HS programs vs. a number of years ago. But yes, that blueshirt season does provide a lot of help to a lot of guys.
Two other parts of this which are "not created equal": we can't assume that every player is going to go into a weight room and giving the same effort, and/or will frequent the room as much as the next guy. Second, not all bodies are created equal: a number of years ago, Cal recruited a highly rated O-Lineman(Eric Mahlum, do I have the name right?)who could not put on weight for the life of him-worked hard, good skills, but couldn't get to the numbers needed, body wouldn't do it.

Some players come in as freshmen and are already halfway maxed out due to their rigorous HS strength programs (which are sometimes at private "performance centers", not at the high school).

One of the keys to successful recruiting is to identify those players and recognize that their upside is not too high and to try and find diamonds in the rough that will improve a lot.

And, yes, if you take 100 18 year olds that are, say 6-2, 210, with similar body types and put them through the same two-year regimen, you will get significant variances in added strength, weight increase and changed looks. Part of the reason for that is that some of them may just be going through the motions, but the main reason is that individuals respond differently to strength training.

Also, responding to one part of this thread, I feel reasonably certain that PEDs are fairly common at all levels of football (post-Pop Warner, at least).

Eric Mahlum was a starter at Cal, had at least a"cup of coffee" in the NFL, and scored a TD for the Bears on the "fumblerooskie" in the Citrus Bowl against Clemson on New Years Day, 1992.
