In the transition from Tedford to Dykes, a few current players contemplated transferring, but after Dykes talked to them, "not one player" decided to leave.

"I talked to everyone who was considering it or on the verge, and everybody is back," Dykes said. "Players are excited. It is positive."

Good read thanks. I'm glad he is impressed with the donors and feels that th perception of cal by others is higher than he originally thought.

I guess he's going to be coming home late....no way he can make it home in 11 minutes at 6:00 on weekdays.

One of the great differences between Lupoi and Dykes:

"Dykes also said he did not encourage any of his former players at Louisiana Tech to consider following their coach to Berkeley, calling it 'bad business.'"

Another impressive point:

"We've had to move on from some kids academically who we thought weren't going to be admitted," Dykes said. "We've got to be real careful about the students we bring in here. It's rigorous. It's tough. Guys have got to be well prepared. That's a good thing."

Glad we have a coach with high ethical standards. I really like his approach in a number of ways. One of those ways has to do with creating a "family atmosphere" at practice. My impression is that Sonny is a very personable guy, which I admire and appreciate a lot--and I believe the players will too. Don't know if it's a fair comparison but Bobby Bowden comes to mind in that regard.

Finally, I like his commitment and work ethic. Article says he will be putting in the hours and travelling all over before LOI day. The impression has been that he and his staff have really rolled up their sleeves and this confirms it.

Grew up in Piedmont - nice place if you can afford it. I'd say 20-25 minutes to make it home from Berkeley.

It's interesting that you are comparing a young, assistant coach to the new head coach. It says great deal about how screwed up the dynamics were when a young assistant coach has that much of an impact on a program.

I've lived less than 2 miles from Piedmont from a decade.

It wasn't until a year or 2 ago that I realized that David Letterman's annual tradition of inviting the Piedmont High birdcallers was from THAT Piedmont.

Anyways, I hope Dykes enjoys Fenton's.

Okaydo: Your "2 miles from Piedmont" brings up a good story. One of my good friends down here, when asked where he lives, says on Balboa island. Next question that follows is always, "On the water?". And his answer is always "No about a million dollars away"-----meaning one block off the water. Close, but not cigar.

I'm sorry......not a chance he makes it home in 11 minutes during school at or near 6pm. It will take a few minutes to get to his car, at least 11 minutes to go from his parked car to Tunnel Rd via Piedmont/Warring/Derby/Belrose/Claremont Blvd. Then......maybe......11 minutes from Claremont/Ashby to Moraga/Highland, and from there to home,?..........then again, leaving the stadium at 6 is probably not going to last long. Leaving after 7pm, 11 minutes MIGHT be doable.
When I have my car at work....it takes 5-8 minutes to go from Regent/Ashby to Hillegass/Alcatraz......6 blocks. Heck, it takes 3-4 minutes just to go from Ashby/Regent to Ashby/Hillegass......that's leaving between 5:30 and 5:45.

Let's not start mapping out "local knowledge" shortcuts on a public message board. Those of us who have lifetimes getting around in the complex system of obstacles and turnabouts that is Berkeley would appreciate it.

Hmmmm,

You might be right.......

On second thought, the best route is:
North Stadium to Hearst, West on Hearst to San Pablo, South on San Pablo to Ashby, West on Ashby to 80 east, 80 to 580, Exit 35th, East to 13, North to Park, west over Park Blvd, right on Estates, then home. 11 minutes, no problem........12 minutes, tops.

Is that better?

I guess the other, more scenic, option would be:
Hearst to San Pablo
San Pablo to University
University to 80 East,
80 to 580w
580 to 101 south,
101 S to n.Van Ness
N Van Ness to S Van Ness
S.Van Ness to Bryant
Bryant to 80E
80 E to 580
580 to 24,
24 to 13
13 to Moraga Way.

His wife can pick him up some nights, along with the kids, and they can stop for a nice dinner at a number of great places on the way home. Should be a good life and location for a busy coach with a young family.

I also lived in Piedmont for many years. 11 minutes is the best case scenario. But it's not very far from campus at all. In the worst cases, the 13 will be backed up and some local traffic in Berkeley. Not a huge deal.

Piedmont is a nice area but I'm surprised he didn't find anything in north Berkeley or Claremont.

13 will be fine when the new bore is completed on 24. 11 minutes is about right in the morn before 7:30, and perhaps a bit longer in the evening - but my guess is he is leaving about 8 or later, so that is about right as well.

Depends on where he lives in Piedmont as well - some of the windy streets take a few minutes longer.

In any event, glad he is in the community. Piedmont is the right place for a Cal coach to be living - nice place, good to show recruits, and still close enough to get to the stadium quickly.

I can email him my special routes depending on time of day, road construction and weather. It is a complex algorithm.

hmm,
not too many houses for sale in Piedmont....

I'd bet it's this one:

Nice location especially now that the city has nixed its plans to rip up moraga canyon for some ugly new fields.

"I think the perception of Cal is stronger than I thought it would be in terms of the potential of the program and the interest level from recruits," Dykes said. "The commitment from alums and the resources are bigger and better than I thought they were. That's a positive."

Perhaps we're shedding the "institutional neglect."
