He's waiting for his SAT scores to come back. The Kid loves Cal and bleeds blue and GOLD. I wish him the best and hope he makes it to Cal.

there's no way a kid would wait a week to send in an LOI for a high school ceremony.
The kid does really want to be here because he could sign elsewhere today too. Hope it works out well for all.

Or he doesn't want to draw any more attention to a potential future Bear even though there may be some academic issues to be resolved.
He's still listed under the Recruiting database commits, and it was updated earlier
He will be a bear but he needs to wait to see if he can qualify with his SAT scores.

I'm a little surprised by Sonny's comments about the importance of SAT scores. Some of the most brilliant people I have ever met at Cal and in grad school did very poorly on their SATs and GREs. I think these standardized tests are good measures of how much money one is willing to spend on test prep. But I do not believe that they accurately measure how well a given student will perform in college or grad school.
I note that Cal's undergrad admissions office (for regular students, not athletes) takes the SATs less seriously than other schools. Hence, "comprehensive review."

He specifically mentioned that their academic personnel mentioned the correlation they've consistently seen between the players that performed well once enrolled vs. the ones who didn't and the ones who struggled the most generally did the poorest on their ACT or SAT.
A lot of athletes are allowed to skate through school but you can't skate through an SAT.

That's a good point. I forgot how some athletes get preferential academic treatment in HS. Still, I think the policy of comprehensive review is better than any single metric, be it for athletes or non-athletes.
I was reviewing grant applications last month, and I told the other members of the committee that I couldn't care less about low GRE scores. They all thought that I was crazy, but they eventually came around.

I think your point is a good one for the general student population but we all know it's not an apples to apples comparison with many football admits.
If you're talking about a student with good grades and an 1100 2-part SAT vs. one with good grades and a 1400 SAT, you may not see a tremendous difference in their collegiate performances. But if you compare a student with a 2.7 with an SAT of 1000 vs one with a 700, you will probably see a student that will struggle mightily in a school like Cal.
