This type of banter goes on all the time ..

you must think that COACH is a big bully LOL

I don't find this at all funny. What he did was to publicly humiliate one of his players in front of coaches, staff, and hundreds of fans.

You're not the first person to try to deflect attention away from the issue at hand. I think people see that through your inconsequential attack upon the person delivering the message. You don't know anything about me.

This is about public ridicule of a student athlete. I have never seen a coach at any level do that. The person sitting next to me expressed concern, trying to imagine what Brendan Bigelow and his parents would think if they were in the audience.

Maybe you had to be there, but in now way, shape or form was this a slam at Bigelow. Dykes was rather trying to make a point about the simplicity of his offense.
sounds like he was there

I'm sure he was there. I'm also sure, based on his past board input, that he's willing interpret anything as negative.

Would agree with that. I'm pretty sure if Dykes announced the cure for cancer on the stage our friend Barsky (uh, I mean BAMS) would proclaim it a waste of taxpayer money. No rational person could have taken this as a slam at Bigelow.

that's true too Although I found it interesting that barsky would go to a signing-day event

I bet it came across as gentle teasing, and we know he was trying to make a point about the offense, but I can also see it coming across as a bit insensitive if it's true that bigelow had trouble learning the blocking schemes

Beary I'd agree with this if Dykes had said "since he can't tell left from right we'll put a big L and a big R on his shoe......" But that's not what he said. He said "if" and the clear implication was nothing was going to keep this kid off the field and that there was nothing wrong with Bigelow's ability to play.

I basically hate the politically correct nitpicking of a great statement to turn it into something it wasn't (although to be clear Beary, I'm not accusing you of doing that). It's stuff like this that turns coaches into robotic automatons mouthing platitudes about "working harder" and "giving it 110%." Bleah. I'll take Dykes any day of the week.

Seriously? Get real. It was absolutely not a slam on Bigelow, who he has yet to even work with, so how would he know anything about his ability to learn his plays? He has just seen Bigelow's FILM. If anything, it was more a slam on Tedford. Dykes is PRAISING Bigelow's TALENT. He is saying Bigelow is so obviously talented he is going to get him on the field PERIOD.

As he has said many times, he will do whatever it takes to get talented players on the field and will design the offense around what they do best.

put a big "L" and a big "R" on his shoes and put him on the field anyway

I actually played with a guy in HS that was dumb as a rock but fast and strong as an ox. The guy played running back, and our coach literally put an "L" and "R" on his respective shoes with white out. Didn't work worth a Sh$t as the guy would forget what the "L" and "R" meant.
It was actually kind of sad as the guy was physically talented but could never get a 2.0. Definitely raised my empathy for coaches who are trying to teach guys that struggle to learn, as well as for guys who are learning disabled and trying to learn the playbook. Our coach would literally lose his mind watching the guy go the wrong way every play.
I'm excited to watch Dykes coach, as I believe he truly has the qualities of a teacher, something that has been lacking IMHO over the last couple years. Can't remember how many times I'd watch guys screw up royally only to watch JT shake his head in disgust but never approach the guy and attempt to teach him. We need more teaching from our HC. Enough of this rant, and I apologize in advance for bringing up HS memories, but the above quote made me remember those days with amusement.

I heard a story that Saban walked over a player who collapsed from exhaustion to make a point.

I think if BB get defensive over a coach ridiculing him a bit, then I wonder how he fills when the crowd chants he sucks.

Uggh! The coach was NOT ridiculing Brendon Bigelow! He was just making a point that he is NOT Tedford and that Bigelow is going to be a focal part of the offense no matter what--the other stuff is all hypothetical---Spring practice hasn't even started yet! He doesn't know how well Bigelow will pick up the plays, and he wasn't saying he won't, he was just saying his offense is SIMPLE and unlike Tedford, he will do what it takes to get a great talent like Bigelow on the field.

BAMS's twisting that into a slam on a player on a public message board sure seems like an attempt at sh*t stirring to undermine the program.

I wouldn't call it "politically correct," just different people interpreting the connotations of a statement differently. Reading your telling of the anecdote again, it sounds like I'd have agreed if I were there. A lot could depend on the way he said it, what question was asked and what background people knew.

I agree totally with calumnus. Dykes was not putting down Bigelow, Dykes was simply stating that guys with talent would be playing (given good practice and class work).

I was there as well, and in the context of how simple his offense is to learn, someone asked the question (in a sarcastic tone, intending to knock JT, IMO) something like this:

"Coach, last year, we had a kid on our roster who shredded Ohio State by the name of Brenden Bigelow but couldn't get playing time the rest of the year because he supposedly couldn't learn our enormous playbook...do you think that will be a problem this year?"

Dykes paused for a second, and then answered, "in our offense, if he knows his left and his right he'll be okay". Clearly (IMO) not confirming whether this was a problem or not, nor trying to slam the previous staff.

Being there, hearing the tone of the original question and in context of the simplicity of his offense, I thought Dykes did a nice job of making a point about the simplicity of his system and injecting a little humor into the moment to keep the event moving along.

Dykes has said his best players will be on the field. Best 11.

He then says Bigelow will be on the field basically no matter what.

Only someone that is looking for something will interpret that as a slam.

Agree. But reading into his comments, I also got the sense that SD was saying that he would use each player for his strengths. If he was a good runner but a poor blocker, he would make use of his running skills and minimize the times he needed to block. Refreshing. A star running back would not have to sit the bench until he developed his blocking abilities.

I was very happy to see BAMS' post. why? Because it so readily reveals him as a caricature of a Liberal. BAMS is the quintessential Berkeley liberal who has just illustrated what happens when one takes political correctness to its ridiculous extreme. It is so...suffocating!

BAMS is locked in such a rigid mindset that he simply cannot see the point that was being made by SD and he certainly can't appreciate the playful and humorous way he made it. What a dreary, angry man.

I know this is not true of all our moderate and left-leaning friends here. But, unfortunately, his mindset is the norm on Berkeley's campus and most other universities in America.

I don't agree with his interpretation but if you'd like to view this in political terms, you're being the caricature of a Conservative -- angry, dismissive and pointing fingers, calling someone else's opinion 'political correctness run wild' to preserve your right to be self-centered and nasty.

Not that it's right to see this in left/right terms.

Careful, now you are being like BAMS, taking something that isn't there to spin it for your own agenda.

This has nothing to do with politics or political correctness.

While I was the first to use the term "political correctness" in this thread, I would have to agree that I don't see this as a left/right issue. Barsky (uh, I mean BAMS) hates the football program and will do anything and everything to run it down. If that means feigning faux outrage over a totally innocent (and quite funny) joke, then so be it. Actually now that I think about it this kind of absurd hyper sensitivity to anything and everything associated with the team reminds me of the rantings of a certain troll. Hmmmmmmm............

I think you've nailed it. The only flaw in my argument is that I'm just not sure there's enough hours in the day for all this to be coming from one person. I mean even psychotics have to take a break sometime to make tinfoil hats or write manifestos or do whatever it is they do when they aren't devoting their energy to taking down Cal's football program. As Mel Brooks said in History of the World Part I......."Work, work, work........"
