Is it still there? I fell in love with Janis Jpolin in 1965 when she performed there, then again in 1966 when she was with Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 at the same venue. She is still my rock queen. Had a few belts with some buddies last night and we were remembering the our days in the City and I wondered if the Avalonis still cranking out rock.
I was going to post a snarky "let me google that for you" response, but I'll dial it back and tell you it closed in 1968 and reopened in 2003, according to wikipedia.
Edit: It also says it opened in 1966, so if that's true you didn't see Joplin there in '65. Of course, you know what they say -- if you remember the 60s, you weren't really there.
I was living on Carl Street in the Haight at that time, so memories are sometimes a little hasey. None the less, Janis is my lady still today. When somebody better comes along, let me know. Thanks
When I decided to become a surfer, and moved to L.A., I got married and the wife and I bought a house (1968) that we still live in. It turned out that the next door neighbors were Peg and Ray Densmore, (parents of John Densmore of the Doors) There were some good times backyard impromtu concerts. On the right night, uncder the right conditions, we still hear Morrison in their backyard.
I always loved the fact that Morrison's father was a rear admiral responsible for naval operations in the Gulf of Tonkin incident that helped set off the war in Vietnam.
Mr. Densmore died several years ago and Peg is in a retirement home in Ventura, last I heard,. But, Jim and she were soul mates and she had a bunch of poems he wrote to her. Some were very good. Went to his grave in Paris, (Pere Lachaise?) a couple years ago and there were a bunch of young kids drinking wine and leaving flowers.

In '65 it was probably Longshoreman's Hall? I snuck in and saw her there once.

I believe those "conditions" are being under the influence of LSD.
My first show at the Avalon, put on by Chet Helms and The Family Dog, was during the Summer of Love of 1967 and featured the Youngbloods and the Siegal Schwall Band. We were living at the time in that infamous apartment building on Piedmont Avenue known as "The Zoo". Those were the daze, my friends.........

Lydia Penz - In Cold Blood. Much better voice and a great brass section.
I was just listening to Oxford Circle yesterday off this compilation of SF mid/late 60s psych pop (4CD box set SF Nuggets)
I thought they might have been a Berkeley band due to their name, but it turns out that itis also a street in Davis. Oxford Circle is not that great a band, but it morphed into a group called Kak which released an excellent album in 1969:
This is kind of a convoluted way to address the following thought: for all the influence of Berkeley had on world culture in the 60s, there really weren't that much good music coming out from there, can anyone think of a great musician from Cal? There was a good deal of great soul/funk coming out from Oakland, but not much from Berkeley proper (CCR is close enough I suppose).
There were a lot of great musical acts coming out of UCLA for instance, like The Doors and The United States of America.

Just out of curiosity, what are your current property taxes?
