Maybe we haven't gotten all the facts yet on the Joe Paterno story.

That is an extraordinarily powerful letter.

Unfortunately, what Sandusky did happened on Joe's watch and for that Joe is culpable.

Why send this letter before the report comes out? This is a PR move, using the relationship between the now deceased Paterno and these student-athletes as a pawn.

From Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post exclusive interview with Joe Paterno:

"He [Paterno] reiterated that McQueary was unclear with him about the nature of what he sawand added that even if McQueary had been more graphic, he's not sure he would have comprehended it.
"You know, he didn't want to get specific," Paterno said. "And to be frank with you I don't know that it would have done any good, because I never heard of, of, rape and a man."

The foregoing statement makes it clear that Joe was no more willing to take accountability for his actions (i.e. turning a blind eye) than the hierarchy of the Catholic Church is for it's role in exponentially expanding the child rape crisis by transferring child rapist priests from one parish to the other like peas in a shell game. Furthermore Paterno and his family extorted millions from Penn State including perks for his family on his way out the door. It took the nerve of a burglar to write such a self serving and untruthful letter. People like the Paternos and Cardinal Mahoney, who is screaming like a stuck pig after being relived of his duties by the Archbishop of LA, will never, ever get it.

I have some sympathy for her, but her claim that this report she commissioned from her own lawyer is not to posthumously try to sanitize Joe Paterno's legacy, but is instead "for the good of the victims" I find to be particularly offensive and repugnant.

Totally agree, bearister

As I understand it, Paterno's widow is essentially claiming that JoPa heard no evil, saw no evil and spoke no evil ... in all the decades in which he, a very demanding Head Coach (her words), was in total control of the program. It's self-serving bull, the "objective' study of her hired gun, notwithstanding.

Paterno died in disgrace - at his own hand, by his own deeds and non-deeds.
Paterno's death does not mitigate what happened - and what didn't happen, but should have happened - in his life.

I'd prefer that Cal struggle to 6-6 records, maybe an occasional bowl game rather than this absurd, winning justifies everything, attitude at the football factories in which the integrity and reputation of the universities, is smeared or destroyed.

I think Dykes will prove that Cal can be a winner and will enhance the reputation of Cal, through results in the classroom and on the field.

In addition to the valid points you make, there is also this: this wasn't "rape and a man" (presumably Paterno's reference has to be of the victim, since virtually all rapes are perpetrated by men), it was a boy. As Paterno himself had children he didn't need prior knowledge of "rape and a man" as he described, he merely needed -if we're to believe his age and other factors made him unaware of pedophilia - a moment of self realization: "what would I do if someone did that to my child" and to act accordingly. Alternatively, he merely needed to invoke his brain or any of the values he should have acquired as a Catholic to understand how wrong this was. The perpetuation of the Paterno cover up and excuses merely pisses me off even more. My true feelings for him and his wife on this front are not appropriate for this board.

It's all about "the brand," (=a cult) for this family: it is seeming the only thing important to them.

It does not seem that any of them "went their own way."

None of them have the courage to "turn off the lights."

Yup. A report commissioned by the Paterno's lawyer? Zero credibility.

Yep. The buck stops at the head coach. If he had no idea what was happening, then Sandusky was either Batman, or Joe Paterno had no business being a head coach. Yet even these are not really excuses either.

I encourage anyone interested in this general topic to watch the documentary linked below currently playing on HBO. Paterno, his family, and his apologists can be analyzed using the framework laid out in this film.

I don't get it. Did this report prove that McQuery never came to Joe and told him about sandusky and boys in the shower? Nope and that's the only way Joe Pa could get exonerated (and that's not even going into sketchy events in the late 90's). Joe Paterno ran that athletic department, shoot he probably could have the university president fired at any time for any reason, so him passing the info and doing nothing says all we need to know IMO. The cult of Pedo State football has got a lot of people brainwashed.

AFAIK, the report doesn't introduce any new evidence and is just a reinterpretation by those hired by the Paterno family to tidy up JoePa's legacy. This just proves the NCAA's contention that JoePa/football is placed on a pedestal at Pedo State.

You mean a pederast-al?
Joe Pa was a pederast-enabler. Sue and her kids extorted millions from PSU on the their way out the door. Sue should stop writing self-serving letters and start writing checks to the victims.

+1 ... she should, she won't.
She has a great need to NOT change her image of her long-time husband.
She has the wealth to live anywhere she wants ... and chooses to live in Denial.

Just when the story might die down and people again go about the business, the Paternos decide to jab the beehive once more. PR geniuses, these people.

Oh come on guys. Who here hasn't engaged in a massive cover up of a serial child abuser to protect our legacy and a multi-million dollar sports empire while simultaneously claiming that honor and integrity are our only guiding principles? I mean if I had a nickel.............

Read the Penn St boards. The fans have been thoroughly brainwashed into the Paterno idolatry and Penn St cult. It's quite sickening to be honest reading their posts blasting the FBI/Freeh report yet taking the Paterno report as gospel. In the days leading up to the firing, the fans had convinced themselves that nothing was wrong and that Sandusky was just engaging in mere "horseplay" with naked boys in the shower. I wanted to puke.

I guess when one has gone to school where college football is King and the university is subordinate to the damn college football team, the reactions are to be expected.

I deal occasionally with a Penn State graduate and am, frankly, unimpressed with this knowledge but he LOVES to talk about Penn State football, especially in contrast to Cal, as if college football has some unexplained relevance to business being conducted. Haven't talked much beyond business topics with him since I referred to PSU as being Pedophile Silence U, which suits me fine as he now has to focus in business conversations on business.

I'm very happy that Dykes "gets" The University of California.
He understands that his job is to prepare his players to be successful and accountable:
1) in the classroom, and
2) on the field.
BOTH

Those are his requirements for recruiting and hopefully he'll never lose that focus.
The Paterno report wasn't the joke I expected it to be. It was worse.
We could go through this outrageous document line by line, but that would make you bored and me sick. So I'll focus instead on the most important part of the Paterno report and explain to you and everyone else, including Sue Paterno and her children, why the Paterno report cannot and will not be believed by anyone but family members and the most loyal fans of Joe Paterno -- who never needed convincing that he was blameless in the Jerry Sandusky reign of terror.
In other words, the Paterno report was 238 pages of failure.

The PSU cult mentality is just so gross. Even now, it seems like so many of them still don't get it.

There's a lot of predictable talk from PSUers about how their community will rise above this scandal, how you can't keep PSU down, how everyone will once again be proud of what it means to be a Nittany Lion. To which I say: Child, please. For a vast majority of that crowd, "what it means to be a Nittany Lion" is drinking your way through 4 years in the middle of nowhere while rooting for a football team that just happened to be really good under one man for awhile, and who contributed so much to your good times that you actually defend him when he enabled child rape. Which, except for that last part, is OK. But don't try to pretend it's something deeper than it is!

In a related story, the Pope just resigned effective the end of this month. The mass coverup of the rape of little boys is finally taking down a lot of important and formerly highly respected men. I wonder if the Pope is going to pass soon like Paterno. The shame and pain has to be tremendous and draining.

I doubt either man has/had shame or pain as a result of their involvement in covering up for the raping of children. Their actions certainly don't indicate that.

I agree with all your points here. It seems the Paterno family doesn't know when it's time to STFU and go away. They're obviously more concerned for their own legacy than the players and coaches, who are trying to move on from this mess.

Katie Couric's interview of the Paterno family was sickening. All softball questions. Her show just gave them a forum to peddle their bullsh*t. Shame on you Ms. Couric! Who is her next guest? Cardinal Roger Mahoney? By the time she finishes interviewing him he will have her convinced that he should be canonized for the way he managed the pedophile priest accusations in the Diocese of Los Angeles.

Neither man will admit to their embarrassment and shame publically. But the jokes and vitriol directed at them now in contrast to the wide-spread adoration they enjoyed before has to be destroying them inside. And the more they and their families/supporters protest, the worse it gets. It'll be interesting who the Vatican selects as its next Pope with the sex abuse scandal spreading wider around the world with each passing day.
