Agreed.

In an era where everyone is adding new colors, having infinite uni combos, and experimenting with all this crazy-out-there stuff, I think we should be trendsetters and go back to a more classic, subdued look. It would be revolutionary. Let's be leaders, not followers. I think people are starting to get sick of all the uniform shenanigans anyway.

I'll call it today (probably 3-4 years early): Simple, classic looks will be the new black.

If you can make the Helmets a matte-color (flat), it would fit into the "subdued look" you're talking about.

I don't mind a Classic look to the Unis at all, but if you can do that to the Helmet it would literally be the cherry on top.

Those would then be our royale with cheese uniforms, right?

We could go back to a classic uniform for the band, too:

I do like your suggestion of a beer, though. ork:

Yes, I think you're right. Same thing happened in the NBA -- after a period of bizarre uniforms in the 90s teams started going back to classic looks.

Gray doesn't look good at all, look at the Seahawks uniforms.

Beast Mode aside, it just looks like their equipment managers haven't washed them since the preseason. I will never understand the obsession with making ugly uniforms just for the sake of being different or new, I don't think we are really under that much pressure to sell jerseys... are we?

I kinda like that shade of grey, just not for us.

Fifty Shades of Grey? Well, that would help recruiting!

We're still trying to figure out the correct shade of blue and gold.

I actually think Grey looks good. But I agree, Gold and Blue do not go with Grey. Grey only looks good with a neon color of sorts.

Don't laugh. There are some old Cal Band uniforms which bear a passing resemblance to this photo.

Nice link, very nice.
Beyond the uniform page, subsequent pages give great personal accounts of being in the Band, march to the stadium, entering the stadium ....
Well-written accounts and very interesting.

Wow! 84 replies makes this the most active discussion re Cal football since the signing day thread. I didn't realize we had so many fashion-conscious boobs on BI. Doesn't really matter. We can get used to any uniform choice (even blue jockstraps and gold bras) as long as we are winning.

The Joe Roth Unis were worn in 2007 on the 30th anniversary of his passing. Why don't you guys save it for very special Anniversaries (like the upcoming 40th five years from now)?

The 1982 Big Game Unis get overlooked as Throwback Uni ideas, even when ideal Anniversary dates come and go (20th, 25th, 30th - last season) over the years and that was a famous game in college football history, much less Cal football history.

BTW it's a shame that Cal Football is only known for the tragic story of Joe Roth and the last-play miracle in the Big Game, both occurring many decades ago. That's just a step above Boston College Football ("Hail Flutie" in 1984) in the wider scheme of things.

That said, it's good to remember the past, and by all means let's wear special Anniversary Unis, but Nostalgia can only take one so far in the years in between. Pretty soon Cal players will have to start making their own history and living for today....and that might mean Unis and Helmet designs that appeal to the generation they live in, the one they represent and participate in.

However, there are classic styles and trends that transcend Time, that's why they are called "classic". That might make everyone happy, regardless of generation.
