The Mayan calendar is actually pretty amazing work of astronomical observation. It is a bunch of 21st century misinterpretations that were the problem.

Mayans had animal sacrifice (as did the Jews in Biblical times) and their rulers engaged in ritual bloodletting (they would cut an incision in their own penises!) but they did not generally engage in human sacrifice (that was more the Aztecs).

Mayans still exist as a people and modern language in the Yucatan and Central America.

If you want to eat Mayan food, try Platano (Salvadorian) on University, specializing in pupusas.
