Sorry for non-Rodgers or non-BeastMode pro talk, but this was talked about here and in other places - Smith wanting a release and there were actually people who thought he deserved it rather than being traded.

Hmm, seems the 49er and harbaugh have done well for themselves. No way a QB who has 50 million in the bank from the 49ers 'deserves' to just be let go when the team can acquire a 2nd rounder. You can still get BIG TIME contributors at that point. Especially if it's the Chiefs pick at #34.

OK, so that's my last 49er's post probably for a long time. I may or may not go back to hatting on Harbaugh in the future.

This is a great deal for SF. I wish Smith the best in KC. He handled his benching like a true professional.

Good trade for the Niners. As for the Chiefs...it could be a decent one.

I think it's a bad trade for the Niners. This year's draft is not filled with talent.

Well hey, if KA drops to the second round, Niners will have a second opportunity to draft him immediately!

2nd round pick, very nice.

Smith is going to get eaten alive in KC. This reminds me of Philly traded Kolb for a 2nd rounder.

A second round pick in exchange for a starting QB doesn't sound like a good trade to me. The Raiders gave up more to get Carson Palmer, who is older and arguably not as good as Smith.

Chronicle makes a good point. Cardinals - Eagles trade of Kolb for a 2nd round + Dominique Rodgers Cromartie = wayyy better than this one.

Niners got the 34th pick and a 3rd to 5th round pick

Philly got the 51st pick and Cromartie (0 interceptions in 2012)

better?

34 pick is ridic nice.

that means they have the 31 and 34th pick. can get 2 really good players there

Every draft has talent. It isn't a good draft for QBs or RBs, but there are great defensive players to be had.

This says more about how bad the Raiders got suckered and less about the Niners.

You can't look at it as the Niners losing a QB for a 2nd round pick. It is really more like losing a fat salary that would be on the bench and getting the 34th pick with it.

this is a good trade. you could pick up a starter with that pick. i dont think that they were going to get much better for alex. they need to build more depth in the secondary.

It wasn't even the front office, it was Hue Jackson who went through with it right? Thank god he isn't the Cal HC.

There are a lot of quality DLers in the draft. Since that is a position of need for SF, it was a very good deal for the Niners.

Yeah, they should have waited till next year to trade Smith....oh wait...

Not sure why you say this is a bad draft. It's loaded with the types of defensive players the Niners need. Furthermore, don't be surprised if SF isn't done trading. The Niners use the old Pats model of stockpiling draft picks in future years, and the 34th pick could easily turn into a 2014 first rounder if Baalke decides he's not in love with any of the top of the first round talent.

Unfortunately for the Niners, Oakland is out of first round picks to give up for nothing.

And since DRC might be playing somewhere else next year, the Eagles essentially got a two year rental of an underwhelming CB and the 51st pick. My bet is that the Niners net more with this trade.

PS Not to be "that guy" but Cromartie had three picks this year. He had zero his first year in Philly.

I stand corrected, saw an old article. However, even his 3 interceptions were so so, they happened in the first 4 games and 2 were against Brandon Weeden's first ever game.

Your larger point, that he was disappointing, is still valid.

KNBR the 49er flagship station reported as of 2 hours ago that the trade includes a 2014 2nd round pick. There is no additional pick this year other than the Chiefs 2nd round pick. You generally get the best value for the money in the 2nd and 3rd rounds where you still get talent but don't pay first round money.

This is an excellent trade for the 49ers. A couple of weeks ago I studied the 49ers draft needs as it relates to the draft eligible talent. I did an extensive analysis including a mock draft through the first 3 rounds. So trust me when I say that having that extra pick at that point (34th overall) is a huge plus for the 49ers.

Alex Smith was virtually worthless to the 49ers and was going to cost a lot. With that money, they can sign a free agent, possibly a DB or a WR.

Now that they have 2 picks early, they can get a top DL and either a DB or WR.

After that, they have 3 more picks through the end of the 3rd round to meet whatever perceived needs remain (TE, OL, backup QB, addtional DB or DL), which means they are mostly free to draft for talent and not need for the rest of the draft.

There are some big name TEs, RBs, DBs and QBs that could drop to the lower rounds.

At this point there is no need for the 49ers to trade up, unless they can find a club willing to take some of their numerous picks in rounds 5-7 for another 2nd or 3rd round pick. But, who's going to be that dumb?

And the tradition of the Chiefs picking up discarded 49ers QBs continues . . .

The thing is that Smith wasn't a starting QB on the 9ers anymore. And Niners aren't paying $8.5 million for a backup QB. The choices were release Smith for nothing or trade him. And most NFL teams have a better or equal QB compared to Smith, so that limits where he could go.

And why do you think the raiders suck? They could really use those 1st rounders, but Hue traded a lot away and for what result

Quality of this years draft doesn't matter (unless you want a 2014 pick?). Smith had to be traded because the 49ers were going to release him anyway. If you are a super bowl losing team, why not get cheap 2nd round help right now and obviously save the $8.5 million on the salary cap and use that to get another player through free agency that could push them over the hump.

The cap implications should not be underestimated. 8 million free to spend is nothing to sneeze at.

Disagree - I don't think the niners were going to release him. The choices were trade him now or hang onto him until some team that is hopeful of making the playoffs has their QB go down to injury next fall. This way is better since they get a great 2nd round pick in addition to a 2014 pick as opposed to having to roll the dice that someone goes down during the season.

Fair enough. That makes sense too, especially long term, but as you say it's rolling the dice on a QB going down and a team becoming desperate. But the trade deadline is pretty early in the season.

In hand now is 2014 2nd rounder and the chance to spend $8.5 million (or not cut 8.5 million in current salary). That's almost like two players for one who wouldn't normally play.

The 34th pick is the 2nd pick in the 2nd round so that's pretty good. You can get an impact player on either side of the ball at 34. A defensive back or maybe KA who knows? Because of DJ's success, I think KA may go sooner than people think - which seems to be mid 2nd round.

Alex is very lucky Harbaugh decided to bring him back when he took over. Alex could very well be out of the league right now having got another chance and failed with a crappy team.

Who keeps thinking that KA is going to go in mid-2nd round? I only see this sentiment on this board. Prior to the inability to work out at the Combine KA was 1st round, 2nd or 1st WR taken by most people. He hasn't necessarily lost that spot, just a pinch of "wait and see" has been added.

Have to say I was worried about him doing something similar (mortgage future, and even worse do it for a nominal gain) just to get a few more wins on his resume at Cal. Except instead of trading first round draft picks, it could have been trading future postseason eligibility. And the dude would be long gone when the sh!t hits the fan.

nnamdi might be available soon as a free agent. Eagles will cut him if he doesn't take a pay cut. Think he'd play in SF for the 8.5 million shipping off alex smith saves the 9ers?
