First, each quarterback has essentially had one practice, and although I understand everyone's excitement at the new guy, I believe it would be wise to simmer down the enthusiasm and not make rash, snap judgments. Further, I would desperately hope Sonny takes a little more time in choosing a quarterback. Consistency isn't proven in one practice.

Q4T

Thanks to those who are reporting from practice, too.

Yes, that is what we were told, but Lasco has been in there for reps.

As of now, I think either Hinder or Kline will be the starter with the other backing up. Goff looks pretty good out there and looks more along than Bridge and Boehm.

Yep, that is the way I saw it too.

Lasco looked really fast, and Coprich & Jonah Hodges (no. 31) consistently caught my wandering eye, as did Gabe King & Kam Jackson.

Also, it appeared that Dyke's talk to the team towards the end was being videotaped, so that video may show up on CalBears later...

The network is filming a special with Dykes, might be a part of it. A Day in the Life Of thing.

I say keep it the big bone formation. It may excite the USC cheerleaders but it will certainly STRETCH the trojan defense.

From the still shots that have been posted, it looks like the QB's are in gold jerseys, but both offensive and deefensive players are in white jerseys. It seems like the receivers would be easier to pick up if the uniforms were distinguishable from the D.

I believe all the defensive players are in blue jerseys. I've seen the same still photos, and what I think you are seeing are drills in which offensive players are lined up on defense to serve as bodies.

Great tweets by Nam ... most impressive thing so far ... the number of players mentioned who I have never heard of ... Sonny's giving everyone an opportunity.

I don't think the staff have made up their minds yet, BTW. I would hope we give the kids more time to compete.

There are some reading in here that Kline getting reps in 11s again indicates he is the frontrunner. I think that is premature. Dykes does say he is hoping to narrow things down to 2 or 3 qbs in the near future. So while I don't think he and Franklin have made up their mind, this does look like it will be a fairly short competition for some of the QBs.

Well, because the D guys were busy elsewhere, there were times O players set up as defensive players during some O drills, with these players constantly moving in & out of either side "of the line." For, example, if the O play was a running back, he would run full speed to the end zone. It appeared that he would then go to the D side of the line & another RB would replace him on the O side. Meanwhile, the plays were run at warp speed.

Also, the D doing drills elsewhere would use other D players to simulate O players...

There were some drills where "actual" D players played on the D side, with substitutions constant during that practice segment.

There were at least 20 different segments to this practice, most with a 5 minute duration, but others longer. Besides various large group segments, there were times when the team would break out in smaller position groups for coaching up sessions; e.g., and right at the end, the QB's were at the NW corner getting instruction/practice arching the ball to the end zone corner...to an imaginary receiver, which was a 55-gal blue plastic barrel!!

When I hear 'spread offense' I think of 4-5 QB running plays per game.(???)
Boehm is by far the best 'running' QB. Will he get a chance to show this dimension??

It was obvious to me that Kline was just better in every phase of every competitive QB drill; shoot, even when they broke out doing footwork drills, he looked like a natural: this kid's got that "it" factor, and he is only going to get better.

I think CD mentioned that previously, that he expected the QB to run 4-5 times per game. If you look at LA Tech last year, the QBs had 63 rushing attempts. Minus 10 sacks = 53 attempts in 12 games = 4.4 rushing atts per game

Lasco and others have been taking non-contact reps. Don't expect them to see the field on Friday in pads. Plus Wark will be at baseball.

As he was "featured" in yesterday's practice, he did get to show off his "legs" a few times!

It is noteworthy that no matter who the "featured" QB was, all the others were still "participating" by standing in a group @ 15 yds behind simulating the actual play....

Slick!

There were a lot a of different QB drills from which to compare, one where the top 5 would all throw to a different receiver at the snap "of all 5 balls," the receivers going in 5 different directions, short & long...

At times, on an exquisite throw, I would ask myself, "Who was that guy," (=as stated in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), and in each case it was "Lefors," seemingly every time...

I agree, especially about the "it" factor. Like I said, he reminds me of Rodgers--slightly smaller than the other guys, but has a quick release, the biggest arm (maybe throws too hard at times) and has a certain confidence about him. Just my (and many other's) observation and opinion. People can take it for what its worth.

On Monday, one snap went over his head, he smoothly caught it on one bounce, turned to his right and completed the pass--throwing against his body--making the broken play and very difficult throw look routine.

"Lafors" was Kline during the Second Practice.

If you ever watched the movie, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," one might perceive why I took poetic license in responding to a respondent to one of my post's in this thread.

Maybe not...

Is this still the BI board? OT this, OT that ... but none refer to Offensive Tackle.

BTW, sorry to interrupt the non-football frivolity, but Sonny had very nice things to say about OT (offensive tackle) Tagaloa: his footwork, ability to adjust, comfort in open space (beyond LOS, look out LBs) and his athleticism. 6'8,350 and he Moves.

He looked good out there, as did his mates. The Offensive line guys were really "into" practice, being really physical in their drills amongst themselves (=the stadium seemed to vibrate once when two of these behemoths pancaked each other...((just kidding, but I did hear something and looked that way))) and vs. the defensive line guys when those segments came up "on the guitar." Coach Yenser was very vocal and active, coaching, coaching, coaching...

The afternoon's session was very competitive as I've read that every player knows they have a shot at playing...or, if they are not "into it," they could be shown "the door."

Soi exciting to hear all you guys stoked and the open practices. I love how everyone is getting reps and knows the paybook already. A shame what JT was doing with the amount of money he was taking away.

:p pLaybook ... but typo is perfectly understandable as you were thinking ahead to you comment on the wealth a former coach received. jt's paybook is very full despite the lack of success with his huge playbook.

Guys are hyped being able to prove that they are athletes and want to play football ... even if they don't get into games, Sonny's practices give them a chance to actually play ... and some are surprising the coaches.

I think our OL will be pretty damn decent this year. And the blocking schemes and plays will allow some of them to get into space for secondary or even primary blocks.

Even Bigelow, who was on crutches during this Second Practice, looked stoked: instead of just remaining in one place, along some sideline, I noticed that he was seemingly "everywhere" during practice; for e.g., at one time, I saw him, sans crutches, pounding with a huge sledge hammer on a large farm tractor tire on the sideline; and after the OL/DL scrum was broken up, and the guys got back to their drill on the south side of the field, and as their spirited, competitive yells grew louder and louder, why, there was Bigs on the field, next to his OL boys, with one crutch jabbing the sky, leading the chorus...
