Hahaha and now Mario Lopez. Ugh!!!

OMG -- I'm old. I had to Google his name. I thought he might be one of those new Dodger players. I'll be shuffling off now.

Believe me, I'd rather not know who he is.

AC Slater!

Anyone ever been to that Bay Street shopping center in Emeryville where the AMC theater is? They built it right on top of the Emeryville shellmound mentioned upthread. Though they did build a small park to commemorate the shellmound.

Surreptitiously dump a bunch of nickel and lead in People's Park one night. "Test" the soil samples a few weeks later. Voila, an EPA Toxic Waste site that needs to be Superfunded.

Cafe Intermezzo, Raleigh’s inch closer to reopening

Quote:

Cafe Intermezzo and Raleigh’s Bar & Grill may reopen after a new building proposal was submitted last week, well over a year since a fire destroyed the two eateries.

The proposal, submitted by building owner Kenneth Ent and designed by Kahn Design Associates, involves constructing a building of nearly 44,000 square feet, which will house Raleigh’s Bar & Grill, Cafe Intermezzo and 42 apartment units at 2441 Haste St., according to the application.

“What we’re really hoping for is the revitalization of Telegraph and making it one of the go-to places for everyone in the community that would like to go and enjoy what it has to offer,” said Charles Kahn, principal of Kahn Design Associates. “It’s an attempt to create a new, fresh feeling on the street. It’s a 21st-century building.”

For Al Geyer, owner of Telegraph business Annapurna and chair of the Telegraph Merchants Association, the new building plan is welcome news for business.

“It’s wonderful,” he said. “We’re happy to see (the process) is being started. The retail restaurant and bar are really missed on Telegraph.”

Let's just see how quick that gets done. Typical stupid Berkeley comments like the new plan doesn't incorporate historical elements of the last building. Yes, let's promote rebuilding a freaking brick building in earthquake country. Genius suggestion, wonder if she understands why there were no brick buildings like it left in town? Same person was probably blocking the stadium for being 'unsafe'.

Though maybe she's on to something, the building does look hideous in those plans...

telegraph has no central focus on the street.

I remember a couple years ago I saw some Cal players hosting a key recruit. They walked around a bit and then stood next to Jamba Juice for awhile taking in the sights and atmosphere.

That's gotta tell you that Telegraph is missing a 'there there'

It would be nice if Telegraph had a small square where there was grass and plants and benches in the center surrounded by some nice shops and restaurants that appeal to students (e.g. Jamba Juice, Pinkberry, Urban Outfitters, etc)

Of course, they'd have to find a way to keep the pan handlers out of the area.

One problem I think Telegraph has is the lack of students during 'off season'. Completely changes the volume of customers when you target your shops/restaurants to students.

I was up there on Saturday and was surprised at how many empty store fronts on Shattuck downtown. I guess there are only so many frozen yogurt stores that people can frequent.

It's already a toxic waste site.

Edited to add: That "Heat Hot Sauce Shop" story made me mad. Someone please tell me Bates and his cabal will die off and things will eventually change in Berkeley. It has to, right? Right??

The store opened this weekend. Looks like the City dropped some requirements and the owners got some donations to help them out.

Bates wants to improve Telegraph Avenue? That's hilarious. He and his allies have been destroying Telegraph Avenue since the 1960s. As for making those streets two-way, that will absolutely choke traffic on them.

Telegraph at Bancroft and all the way down to Ashby was so nice before the hippies, FSM and Bates' Buddies. It will never be back.

I agree 100%, but so little actually changes in Berkeley. Contrast it with Emeryville, which was an armpit back in the early-mid 80s, and has been completely transformed in the intervening years.

I realize this will never happen, but here is what I'd suggest:

a) Build a huge multi level parking garage on the current people's park site.
b) Turn Haste, Channing, Durant, Telegraph, and Bowditch into pedestrian walking mall between a rectangle of Dwight/Dana/Bancroft/College.
c) Build luridly lit pedestrian underpasses under Bancroft so pedestrians can cross onto campus withut consantly stopping traffic.

What I've seen work in other cities is building one-stop-shopping centers for the homeless away from where you don't want them. Often, these are public-private partnerships that give them access to food, shelter, and direction toward social services. In a perfect world, I'd like that built in Panoramic Hills to show my appreciation for their help with the stadium. Ideally, you'd want it down near Gilman/580; realistically, I have no idea where you'd put it, given the various hallenges with real estate costs, etc. Even if you moved the homeless, they will still gravitate to Southside because they know the students are soft hearted and are always good for a few bucks.

If this means what I think - Love this, Love this, Love this, Love this! Would a SuperTarget or (Heaven Forbid) a Wal Mart help stretch tight student dollars? Yes it would. (A mini-Costco would be even better). Probably just me, but I'd like to see McDs, BK, Taco Bell, Five Guys, Carls Jr. and the rest of the gang closer to campus. Maybe even (again, Heaven Forbid) Chili's, Applebee''s, or TGI Fridays.

I agree that (Street) People's Park is the main problem. Remove that and a large part of the homeless on Telegraph would disappear. I like the idea of giving the homeless another place to stay and receive food, medical attention, and shelter. There are many places this could be in Berkeley or Oakland or Richmond.

But a parking lot would not do much for the area. Keep it as a park/playground for students and kids. (Think -- Ricki Henderson style Little League Field with adjoining BB courts.) The open spaces around campus are disappearing too fast.

As for the store - Costco is a real "Berkeley" store. Good prices. Good employment policies for the workers. A mini-costco would do wonders for the South of Campus area maybe the location where that grocery store recently closed.
