Who cares? Durant top dog is the only good top dog.

I am down from Seattle and before going to BB game Thursday, parked on Northside and my mouth watered as I approached TD for my two hot links. The disdain on my face as I entered pizzblah was clearly visible to the guy at the counter. Funny as I suspected something was different as the place in and around was a morgue.

Northside has been dead/super sleepy for years now. Once Northside Books (Patty Hearst's favor hang) and the movie theater went, I think that was it. Stopped by TD on NS maybe two years ago on a random weekday evening, during school, and it was deserted, kinda twilight zone-ish. I think the area gets lunch biz but that's it. Oh well at least it's still going.

This reminds me when Coca Cola decided to replace their original Coke with New Coke and we all know how that turned out. One of the worst business decisions of all time. Isn't La Vals still up on the Northside? The only thing worse is if they changed it from Top Dog to Vegan Dog!

That, or the owners idiotic, decades old postings scared customers away.

Changing demographics, combined with high tuition costs, will make business tough near the campus.

Never went to Northside except on gamedays. Was crowded on those days.

Southside? What are the changing demographics? It is still predominately students. And cheap food, coffee and ice cream will always proliferate.

Many decades later, those same folks have no need for Top Dogs, or cafes, for that matter. Students are a minority of residents in the north.

Yeah, Northside's Top Dog is gone, but there are some great new places on Euclid. Northside Cafe is amazing! Great salads, great breakfasts, baked potatoes, specialty sandwiches. Vinnie's Cheesesteaks is the classic sandwich plus great fries. And if you want tradition, Stuffed Inn is still making the best homemade soup in town every day.

When the owner of a 40 year old institution changes direction.....the owner has lost his fire. Too bad.........best pizzahhh slice in the area is at Arnell's.

In the 5 years i lived at berkeley, I never went to Northside Top Dog once. Just Durant and the one on Oxford. But for the Engineers' sake, it's a shame that the northside one closed.

The Northside theatre was the best, Big Arts downstairs, Northside la Val's and the Cheshire Cat on a Friday or Saturday night packed and hammered. Rather ripped records, giant burger,Berkeley high kids and cal kids early 70s,PARTY ON!

that pizza place might as well close down, the disappointment of people walking there and not seeing top dog and trying to market to those same people doesnt sound like a successful business model

Of course, the whole town was crazy in the old days. When the Greeks moved to the south side, the north side blossomed. Oh well, the youngens will never know.

Time for my sits bath.

The frats really had some rockin party's in the 70s. The big game party's in 72,74 were epic.:bluecarrot:

I cannot imagine my years at Cal as an engineering student, undergrad and grad, without Northside Top Dog. I think I averaged at least 4 days per week and sometimes a weekend visit too.
I was always excited to see the small TV that had been stolen from Durant Top Dog, or so the notice stated. I was never sure of the accuracy of this report.
I hope the new place is successful. So many great memories there!

Another one had a pool, I had a class with the guy taking money, he took a break and never came back. A half hour later the Frat boys realized that a non member was collecting the money at the gate. Freak out, all was well when they saw the money was all there. Someone probably heard about it Sunday morning. Anyway, no one was in the pool, then everyone was in the pool, clothes everywhere, flooded by the overflow, some amazing times.

They repainted two Top Dog signs in the remodel...absolutely bizarre. Since I couldn't eat on Thursday, I looked forward to visiting the South Side location today but the line was 20 deep and we ate at La Burrita instead. Guess I will have to wait until football season .

But I was an engineering student in the late 60's pulling all nighters at the Naval Architecture Building working on computer programs. Without Top Dog and Giant Burger they would have found a skeleton at the key punch machine.
By the time I was a senior I was able to use the computer for the reactor at Etcheverry for senior projects. Nuclear Security under Ronnie was a bit laxer back then.
For much of the Eighties and Nineties my parking pass for football was on the Northside and Top Dog Northside, two Bockwursts and an apple turnover for halftime was the gameday staple. Dining at the Southside TD was never a pleasure when my parking permit was moved to the 'units'.

Might have had something to do with the Northside employees being megacnts. I stopped going on gamedays a couple years ago because the staff was incompetent and slow...

At first I was upset... but it is not a big deal. Just a little piece of the experience is gone...

Mabe nasty little bitches with attitude are better suited for selling pizzahhh.
I'm not the greatest businessman, but seems to me it's cheaper to cut the NLBwA loose than retool for pizzahhh.

Wasn't Big Art's on Durant?
Downstairs LaValle's was a folk music/poetry venue......as I recall, The Subterranean.
