Is Goff the man?

Sounds like Goff had a good day while Kline did just ok.

I've been a big Kline fan for some time and Goff is new to the scene so I haven't formed much of an opinion yet.

But if Goff turns out to be the QB (yes, it's still early) and if he turns out to be a stud during actual game play, that'll be pretty freak if awesome. Imagine a stud true freshman just getting better with each season.

*sunshine pump off*

No matter what happens, it sounds like there's pretty good competition between Klindergoff and that can only drive them to get better.

Sounds like it so far ... although I just hate to see Kline transfer.

Kline already said he would root for whoever starts if he doesn't.

I hope Goff is on a serious weight gain plan either way. He's like 185 or so right now correct? How much could he realistically put in by Sept?

I like it!

It's awesome that these three guys are all getting their chance and are duking it out. Going into the year, I was all pumped for Kline to take over, but now I don't really care... just let the best man win and have good backups ready in case anything goes wrong... OK, I'm kinda rooting for Goff.

A lot of people seem to be worried about what could happen if a true freshman gets the nod. If I'm a recruit considering Cal, I love it.

Your right. I mean he's only 23 lbs heavier then Maynard.

On the one hand, I'm concerned because Hinder and Kline (especially Kline) being left behind because they had so much potential.

On the other hand, it always annoyed me that Tedford never started a true freshman when other schools would, and would find success.

we also saw what happened w/ furd last season.... Nottingham the heir apparent never sniffs the field, and the fall starter gets displaced halfway through the season. Anything can happen... just ask Matt Flynn in Seattle.

It's probably because his playbook was too complicated for a freshman to comprehend in his first year.

Maybe there is room for everyone: Goff, the man; Kline, backup; Hinder and Boehm, wide receivers....

When Kline or Hinder aren't getting it done, Sonny turns his head and Goffs.

10-15 easy. Do not want to push it too much. Last thing you want is lifting related injury.

I agree that there it is too early to name a starter. But all the reports sound fairly bad for Kline. He will really need to step up and stop throwing interceptions. And he will need to make a push fairly soon. There is enough time, but not a whole lot of time.

I think Kline has lost his confidence. When he said he would root for whomever won, I bet he did not think it would be goff. No way he does not transfer. Just hope it's not to Washington.

Still early, but you could regularly play two qbs. One the starter and the other a change up, more of a running threat. Northwestern does this with a lot of success moving in Colter as the running qb.

A problem is it works best if the second qb is already in the game as a wideout and first teamer moves to wide out. Defense must adjust late as opposed to adjusting to substitution package. I think NU does it both ways thoughColter is almost always on field someplace.

Anyway, when I read of the two qbs at wideout, that sort of system is what came to mind.

No way it's Washington. The Pac-12 says you have to sit out two years if you want to transfer from one Pac-12 school to another. Besides, Sonny would never grant him a release to UW.

If he does transfer, it would more likely to a place like Boise, Fresno, SJSU, BYU, etc.

Someone who has lost confidence wouldn't have the confidence to transfer. Kline has plenty of confidence. He's nailing the long throws, which is something none of our quarterbacks have been able to do since Rodgers, and even AR wasn't all that great with the deep ball. All he has to do is focus on the short stuff, especially those screen passes that JT just loved. Why you'd throw 20 yards laterally, to a guy who's standing behind the line of scrimmage all the time makes little sense most of the time, and I doubt we'll be doing a lot of that anyway, but if he needs to work on his touch and the short passes, he will. If he wants it bad enough, he'll make it. And maybe we will platoon if they're both that good. Way, way too early to start freaking out. He isn't. We shouldn't be either.

Enough of the transfer talk. Sonny is going to use everyone. He will confuse the Crap out of everyone. Our receivers will get used to catching from a righty and lefty

It's my understanding that Goff played in a similar offense in high school.
As such, he should be better than the other quarterbacks in the early going.
It's early, give the other two more time to learn the system then see who's best

Well, the screen and slant are the staples of the Bear Raid. Kline, if he wants to start must become proficient.

The fact that Goff commited so early and knew that Kline was here makes me think that Goff doesn't lack confidence and ability great things for a quarterback.

Kline and Goff are technically both Freshman. The job is a long way from being determined. Kline and Goff are both talented QBs and who ever wins the job this year will battle again for the job next year. Also lets say that Goff wins the job, and Kline was the back up, why would he transfer when he is only 1 hit away from starting at his dream school???

Longshore was real good on the long throw in 06 and first half of 07.

Oh my God we might have someone who is good enough to step on campus as a true freshman and win the starting position! This is terrible. What will happen to the backups!

Exactly. And the good news for the Kline fans is that he has plenty of time to learn to do that before the season starts. For those of us who are just Cal fans, this is fun and I could see any of the top three pulling it out. May the best QB win and may the position be continually evaluated for who that is at any given point in time!

Haven't seen this mentioned and, granted, it may be a FWIW deal, but I'm reminded of the series that ESPN, I think, did on the Elite 11 Camp last year.

Goff was there, but was hardly ever mentioned and hardly ever shown. They seemed to have focused on the flamboyant kids (who did not necessarily stand out) and the highest touted ones. Very few plays of Goff's were shown and I don't remember more than two short interviews.

Except... in every discussion the coaches had as to the top 5 or the top 10, someone always said some version of, "...'course you got to put Jared in there." Then, they would nod. And, sure enough, when they showed the resulting list, his name would be in there.

What this suggests to me is that he's good, he's level headed, he just goes out and performs, but doesn't make for the most entertaining subject.

That kind of competition didn't seem to faze him. This isn't seeming to, either. Wouldn't be surprised if he takes it.
