So apparently, Muhaamad's dad lied about his son's birthplace & age. Is one year really that big of a deal? And does it matter if he were born in Nevada, LA, or Long Beach??? To make this matter worse, he tried to bribe the LA Times reporter.... Weird stuff.

It depends on when he had the advantage.

A lot of youth sports development is getting the opportunity to receive the elite training and competition. There are studies that show that elite soccer players tend to have birthdates in the first third of the year. That small advantage at a young age separates them from their peers and opens the door to opportunities the younger, smaller and weaker kids never get.

After years of superior training, they are superior players. Go figure.

This is not to say younger players cannot rise, it is just harder for them. So give an athletically gifted kid a one year age advantage and you can expect that he will rise to that elite group that gets the best of everything. It could be a big head start (see Freddie Adu)

I wonder what his driver's license says. Wouldn't it be a crime to put the wrong birthdate on your license? How about a passport if he has one?
