I loved how Marshawn surfaced to play today. If memory serves, I think Les Richter came back to kick a field goal in street clothes because the Rams had a rule that their players couldn't suit up for anyone else. I also remember Craig Morton and Joe Kapp taking a few snaps and a game where our varsity played the alums who brought cases of beer to help them through the day. Anyone else remember this? It's been awhile.

Doubt the Seahawks would be happy with Marshawn today. The obvious "what if" is if he got hurt....

It didn't look like anyone was even trying to lay a hand on Mr. Mode out there. I'm sure he was well protected from the powers that be. And I'm sure the Seahawks will be plenty happy with the positive publicity.

I recall Ralph DeLoach's reaction when Kapp took the field in a Spring Game.
DeLoach was taking it seriously and didn't like the fooling around with an old alum in street clothes.
DeLoach got all over Kapp, solid contact and sent Kapp flying and spinning.
It was funny but Kapp was stunned and unhurt ... and DeLoach had a solid season at DE.

The defensive players were all instructed not to touch Marshawn. Just some positive publicity in the offseason for Cal and Marshawn. I'm sure the Seahawks would rather have him do this than get busted for marijuana, possession of handguns, or running over pedestrians.

Dykes said afterwards that the defense was told there would be a $25m fine if they touched Marshawn. I think the chance for injury was quite low

I would add that Kapp was the coach of the alumni team for that Spring Game. Kapp finally entered the game himself, because the alumni team was playing so poorly. True, Kapp was in street clothes, but let me describe: Kapp was wearing no pads, no helmet, wore thongs for shoes, and wore a big Panama hat on his head when he entered the game. He completed his first three passes, looking like the Kapp of yesteryear. That is probably what made DeLoach mad. Nobody would want to get his butt whipped by an old guy in thongs and a Panama hat. I don't remember the hit, but I doubt that Kapp was ever stunned much by any hit on a football field. The guy was indestructible.

Was that slam really necessary? He paid the price for those actions already, no need to harp on them when he's trying to do a good thing.

As you stated, Marshawn is a Seahawk and a proud Cal alum

... not a fuskie (and you forgot about the rape charges fuskies seem to accumulate as well)

I remember back in the70's, Joe Kapp was coaching the Alumni. He had hired, I believe Carol Doda from North Beach to be the water 'boy". It was quite amazing as a young lad to see her boobs bouncing as she ran on and off the field. :woohoo

I remember the year Morton came back and played. As I recall he took a snap with a beer can in hand, or he set it down and took the snap. I thought he was drunk and it appeared to be a joke to him. I guess I am a curmudgeon, but I did not find it amusing. I say this because I felt the spring game was not a joke - a time for fun, but not for totally disrespecting the hard work of the players.

I also have this vague memory of Morton wearing a sports shirt that got shredded in the festivities.

After reading this thread, does anyone get the same feeling that I do, that life under Tedford, at least for the Spring Game, might have been a little too serious? Did any alums come back and play in his Spring Games?

Can we just get Rodgers, DJax, Marshawn, Tony G, Decoud, Namdi, and a few others to be on the field at the same time?

Oh what a feeling that would be.

You should have watched the Pro Bowl a few years ago.

Mike White was coaching - they did a squad vs. alumni Spring Game. Jack Clark and Rob Purnell were on the Alumni team and I remember Rob's brother saying it looked like he was "Pulling a wagon" during his time in the game......
