A Public Apology to Chris Fetters and Scout.com

I think I owe an apology to Chris Fetters and Scout.com. I think because the insults were posted on this board, the apology should also be posted here. If the moderators want to remove this apology because it involves another site, so be it.

Over the years, for the fun of it, I have paid close attention to the Scout talent evaluation that has been assigned to Cal recruits and Cal commits. We know, or at least we think we know, that Chris Fetters likes UW. Even though MB has told us several times that Fetters does not have that much input on what rank Scout assigns the players, I have watched several top 10 prospects commit to Cal and then get thorough Scout ranking demotions. It has happened seemingly many times over the last 8 years. With enough consistency from year to year of it happening time and again, it appeared that Scout was just being D---- for the fun of it against Cal players. For that, I insulted them.

However, for those insults, I now apologize. Scouting the high school players in their junior years and then watching them perform in college is a 6 year process and almost a 7 year process. Everybody knows that you can't be entirely accurate on everybody because scouting involves projecting what the players will become in college. In reference to the Cal players that received thorough downgrades after committing to Cal, I have watched many of their careers play out at Cal. Many of them joined the team with bright and shining stars attached in my mind. Promptly upon arrival, they disappeared and gave almost no contribution to Cal during football games. It makes me think that maybe Scout was right in giving them high school senior year downgrades. I am thinking of specific names. But, I am not mentioning the specific names because I do not believe in publicly insulting college kids. The athletes are limited public figures but they are still just college kids and even if they don't produce on the field, they still chose Cal and for this they have my allegiance. Sorry to Mr. Chris Fetters and Scout.com for publicly on internet forums attacking your best efforts in ranking hundreds of athletes year after year.

questionable.

Scout has been seemingly fair to Cal commits for at least the last 5 seasons. if you look at rating averages of each class, compared to Rivals, and even to ESPN, you'll see that 4/5 times Scout rated Cal's classes at least as high as Rivals, if not higher.

what Fetters impact was on potential rating biases prior to the last half decade....that's still up for debate.

This doesn't change the fact that Fetters is still a husky blowhard.

How do you type so well from under Chris Fetters' desk?

This is as opposed to all of the UW recruits who were assigned higher star ratings after they committed to UW and then went on to stellar college careers, right?

I'll follow your lead and not name any names, but there are a lot in the other direction as well.

Contrary to what you believe, I have found Scout's evals to be less than Rivals, 24/7, and ESPN as a general rule. I don't think you owe them an apology. Whether a kid came in with five stars and didn't contribute commensurate with his high school measurement may have something to do with the position coach, injuries and/or the competition. He may find that he was a BMOC in high school, but just another guy in college. Manhandling high school kids can lead to complacency at the college level.

So when Scout gives a lower rating than the other services, I don't attribute that to greater insight just a negative attitude toward everyone. They rate harder, perhaps. Doesn't mean that they are any brighter or more clever.

I think most of us agree that our recruiting from '08 through '10 was not the best and we felt the result of that effort in 2011 and 2012. It has nothing to do with the braintrust at Scout.

If one exists, are you allowed to post the letter sent to you that threatens legal action?

I never understood the hostility and now the apology. I think all the evaluators are crap. I think a major factor in their ratings is who is recruiting a kid and where he verbals. It's an ass backward way of rating a kid but its probably effective if lazy and unprofessional.

an insult. An insult is saying someone's idea of a balanced meal is two hands on a Big Mac, if said person hypothetically has a weight issue.

Why did this have to be posted and not just sent as an email? Especially if people here don't or didn't care, or remember?

vanity? low self-esteem? need for attention of any kind?
Maybe Fetters said he'd only agree to a date with the OP if he published a lengthy "apology" on BI.

It's going to be a long wait for fall practices so there will probably be many threads like this ....

This is one of the oddest threads on BI in a long time. That said I take nothing back of the stuff said about Fetters.

It goes both ways. Several QB prospects over the years saw their ratings increase after receiving an offer from Cal and Tedford, who had until recently a very good reputation with QBs.

All the recruiting sites do this to an extent.
mbBear

Yes maybe so, on top of which if the goal was to apologize, the OP started a thread that opened the door to more bashing, so he/she has that going for them.

I'm sure Fetters is now weeping tears of joy that an anonymous BI member apologized to him...

Nah, as another poster said above, it sounds like bearister lost a bet and has to humiliate himself by kissing Fetters' rather large posterior publicly. It would have been better if he posted this on the Udud board.

There's no rational reason for "apologizing" to the enemy from another site.

You guys crack me up! The replies have me laughing!

No legal action was threatened. No action was threatened. No letter was received.

Between the different companies, I have no idea which ones are better at evaluating talent. I follow Scout.com's recruit rankings the closest only because I subjectively like the format the most.

Over the years, I have been greatly upset at what seemed were Scout's antics with demoting players after they commit to Cal. But, in hindsight, after those players disappeared at Cal and did not become regular starters or contributors, somebody honestly probably did not deserve to be ranked in the top ten at their position after their junior year in high school if they can't win the starting job at Cal. So, the process is a long one. And, despite my initial insults, due to the results on the field or due to lack of playing time on the field, being honest, many years later it appears that Scout was right.

If Scout inflates player rankings after they commit to UW, I don't know. I don't know anything about UW recruiting, besides the fact that there is a former Cal scumbag on their staff. I don't follow UW's recruiting.

I'm just curious - If you had won the bet instead of losing, what were you going to make the other guy do? If he's a Stanford fan, I would have gone with force him to post a long dissertation on the Stanford board arguing that The Play was a completely legal and just result.

The main problem I have with Scout is they don't update the site very often an so I find their data a little lacking in credibity. For example right now they only have ranked about half of their 3 star athletes. Also they are the only site I know that leaves the same cover story up for days before posting the latest news. It seems like they really aren't very Cal-centric.

In general it is pretty frustrating getting accurate information from these sites because there is very little consistency between them.

I've never for a second believed that Scout conspires against Cal to downgrade our recruits. Any conspiracy is extremely difficult to pull off, for the number of people you need to keep quiet. To conduct a conspiracy for something as inconsequential as recruiting ranking would be quite laughable.

It's easier when there are only a few guys making the recruiting rankings on the West coast and they all happen to be Udud fans.
