I've been meaning to post this for a while.

From 65 years ago.

I was unable to find out if these three female fans are still alive, but the guy with his hands on his face is still around -- I found his wife's obit from last year.

The student Life followed around, Harris Steiner, is apparently still alive.

Here's his sister's obit from August of last year. He would be 81 or 82 (born in 1931).

Another tidbit:

The professor pictured above, Joel Hildebrand, legendary chemist was honored with Hildebrand Hall.

He was born in 1881 and died in 1983.

Okaydo, you are amazing! You continue to amaze me with the stuff you come up with. This was fabulous.

I noticed very few people, if any, were wearing sunglasses in the student section. The guys wore long sleeved white shirts. Those people, many now gone, are our parents and grandparents. They made Cal great.

Following WWII, many scientists made their way to the West Coast and found a friendly environment where they could teach and conduct research. It's the stuff that made us what we have been and what we continue to be 65 years later. Still the world's greatest public university.

In the rooting section there were caps that were worn with a bill that was longer than that of a baseball cap, but basically a baseball type cap. They were blue on oneside and yellow/gold on the other. You would write the years games and scores on the gold side in ball point pen. And yes, there were frozen gremlins that you would add vodka to, or oranges injected with same. Some of the slings fabricated by engineering students could get an orange to the 'furd band on the opposite side of the field. The male cheerleaders were good. If not, they were harassed, so they were good. It was a matter of pride for them to arouse the masses and perform well. That deteriorated over time and Rally Com became more of a geek squad. Don't know it's reputation on campus of late.

A little before my time, but thanks for the walkback in time Okaydo...

Fall '48 was my mom & dad's freshman year at Cal. I kept looking for them in those pictures - no avail, but thanks for the memories. Those were good times at Cal (or so I heard)

I was reminded of how supportive and proud the state once was (tuition-free, best equipment & salaries). We need to get back to that place.

Go Bears!

In 62 during indoctrination AKA new student orientation they gave us what they called "Freshman Beanies" something like you describe.
I still have mine around here somewhere. Turns up everytime I sort through my game gear.

Not the best resolution. This may have been filmed by Northwestern. No time outs, or halftime shortens the duration to the pregame warm up and game action only. But...it is still interesting to watch. You get to see Jackie Jensen run and Bob Celeri hand off.

They're not anywhere in those pictures, but my parents were *both* in the rooting section that day- vs USC, in 1948, iirc- though they didn't actually meet until about 5 years later.

Of all those photos, it's the one above that was actually the *most* (in)famous among people who were actually there that day- at least the way I heard the story. Just think for a minute- do you actually believe that Life Magazine set out to put a bunch of *female* football fans on their cover?? No- they came *specifically* asking for a cover photo of the then infamous WWII combat vet-laden Cal Men's Rooting Section. And the yell leaders and the section willingly obliged them. Look carefully at that picture- you'll see that it's been the 1948 equivalent of photoshopped. The yell leader(s) were leading the section in, ummm... gesturing... at the photographers, and no matter how often they were asked not to, they just kept right on doing it -until the frustrated photographers went over to the mixed section and took pictures of the women instead. (I heard my dad repeat that drunken story for years, but never actually saw the picture until about six months ago, when I too found this spread on line.)

(Oh, and if you actually *dared* to wear RED in front of those guys, you WOULD find your self "rolled up." :axe :axe :axe )

My Dad is gone now, but he was a pilot in WWII who took advantage of the GI Bill to go to Cal where he met my Mom. I am sure I saw at least one of their old friends in these photos, and I will pore over it with my Mom to find them somewhere, as they rarely missed a game and held season tickets forever after. These were great Americans who loved Cal and built our great State.

Great stuff Okaydo. In 1975, I was just a freshman taking Chem in 1PSL. I was over in Hildebrand Hall when I saw some very dapper old old old guy walking down the hall. Some Chem T.A. told me that was Joel Hildebrand. I was like " holy sh*t ". Also, when I was in dental practice, I used to refer some patients to an older orthodontist in Concord. Dr. Robert Chiappone. He also was the center for Joe Kapp in 49' and at the Rose Bowl.

I got into the Cal rooting section in 1954 when I was a High School senior as a friend of mine was a Cal Frosh. Although the separate mens' section has been mentioned here and a "mixed" section, I believe you all may know that the women only sections were replete with blue and gold poms poms on either side of the all white mens' section. Very effective sight to fans across the stadium.

Wish I had known to wear a cap to the games. Ditto shades. Seems we all wore khaki pants. And just about every guy had VERY closely cropped hair. And I wore almost a pompadour in High School!

And, yes, we had a large temporary section of bleachers above the top row of the stadium. I hate to see Memorial Stadium lose seating over these last few years, but the new experience makes me proud that we finally have a decent place for games.

I wonder if many here can remember or have seen pictures of when Telegraph Avenue used to go right to Sather Gate and formed a cul-de-sac?
