This is really great. I love seeing pictures of campus before 1960 when all of the monstrous buildings started going up.

I remember someone else on this board posted a great color photo taken from the Big C overlooking the campus. I think it was taken in the 60s, and you could already see some of the changes.

There sure were some giants of chemistry teaching at that time.

Really brought back memories of my first time on campus (1949 USC game) and my years 1954-9 as a student. Sproul was president when I entered. I had met him at an alumni gathering the summer before I enrolled and was surprised when he recognized me (remembered name and place) coming through the reception line at a new student event. Lines and fee structures very familiar. That chem lecture looked a lot like some I sat through as a frosh with Dr. Powell. The pool at Hearst gym was open for coed swims at least part of the time I was there. Thanks!

Well let's see- that was almost 65 years ago... so if the youngest ones were 18 and the oldest say 28 (and many of them were probably 25-28 - returning vets who started in '47 or '48 at age 23+) they'd be 83-93 today, and would have stuck will the Bears from the glory days through riots and hippies and anti-athletic administrations and everything, yet are still showing up. So I'd say they've more than earned the right to sit and enjoy a game without having to ask people not to needlessly make them stand.

Thanks so much for posting this essay. This was about the time I went to my first Cal game with my dad, and where I remember Jackie Jensen running wild at Memorial. Great photos all. I do remember the Cal girls being pretty rabid football fans back then.
